TRACK & FIELD TURNS IN TOP PERFORMANCES ON OPENING DAY OF HIGHLANDER INVITE

RADFORD, Va. ---- Radford opened the 2015 Highlander Invite at Cupp Stadium on Friday night with several top-10 finishes on and off the track. Madeline Thomas led the way for the Highlanders with a second-place finish in the 5,000-meter run.
Thomas ran a time of 18:25.91 in the 5,000 meters after battling with the front runner for the majority of the race. Teammate Emily Marshall finished in the top-10 with a 19:39.42 to take seventh.
Radford notched a pair of top-five finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Courtney Rice and Courtney Burton going 3-4. Rice turned in a time of 11:38.16, as Burton ran a 12:29.57.
Emmalene Hale led Radford in the discus with a fourth place finish. Hale threw a lifetime best 40.23m, beating out her best from 2013 of 39.31m. Shania Williams took seventh with a mark of 35.51m. Naihla Rose-Delia also found herself inside the top 10, taking ninth with a heave of 32.60m.
In the javelin, Jessica Shelton paced the Highlanders with a throw of 29.73m to take ninth and shatter her previous best of 22.09m from earlier this season. Monica Mallory recorded a mark of 27.40m, also setting a new career best in the event.
Morgan Harris notched a top-10 performance in the long jump, taking home seventh-place honors with a career-best leap of 5.20m. Jamiecka Baker had a best mark of 4.80m on the day.
Saturday begins with the men's discus and women's shot put at 9 a.m. Field event close at 1 p.m. with the men's hammer. Running will start at noon with the prelims of the women's 100-meter hurdles. The 4x400-meter relays will be the final events ran at approximately 2:50 p.m.
