RADFORD, Va. – Despite a strong second half, the Radford women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to East Tennessee State Monday night at Cupp Stadium.
The Highlanders fell to 1-1 on the season, while East Tennessee State improved to 2-0.
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, Radford had the better of the play for much of the second half and got within one goal when senior forward Asyia Mitchell scored in the 83rd minute. Freshman Alyssa Rodriguez put a shot on goal from just outside the box and when ETSU keeper Jasmine Elliott couldn't hold on, Mitchell was right there in front to put home the rebound.
The Buccaneers, though, regained the two-goal advantage in the 88th minute on a long shot by Thomai Vardali.
The Highlanders outshot ETSU 13-5 in the second half to take a 17-15 advantage in the game. They also collected five of their seven corners in the last 45 minutes and nearly capitalized on one just after halftime.
Jordan Lundin sent a ball to the near side of the box and a header by junior Hannah Thomas went off the post. Jasmine Casarez got a shot on the rebound, but Elliott made the save. Elliott also made a stop on a shot by Jessica Wollmann that was headed for the left corner several minutes later.
ETSU got on the board in the 21st minute as Irina Brutsch took a pass in the middle of the box from Molly Collinson and put a shot into the right side. The Buccaneers made it 2-0 with less than five minutes left in the half. Sarah Zadrazil took a high shot from the left side of the box and goalkeeper Katie McCormick got a piece of the ball but not enough to stop it from bouncing past the line.
For the second straight game, Radford limited the opponent to just four shots on goal. The Highlanders put seven on the ETSU net. Casarez again led the team in shots with four and Wollman had three.
Radford will now prepare for its first road trip of the season as it heads to Appalachian State Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The game will be aired live on ESPN3. The Highlanders then return home to host College of Charleston Sunday at 1 p.m.
