Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

SOHRABI REACHES MILESTONE AS HIGHLANDERS BLANK VMI 1-0

RADFORD, Va. – Freshman Ana Revollo's first collegiate goal was all the Radford women's soccer team needed to help head coach Ben Sohrabi hit a milestone with a 1-0 shutout of VMI Friday night at Cupp Stadium.

Revollo found the back of the net in the 47th minute and the Highlanders dominated play throughout to improve to 3-2 on the season.

The win was Sohrabi's 200th as the program's leader in his 20th season in the New River Valley.

"I've really enjoyed living here and being a part of this University," Sohrabi said. "I just think it's great for the program. I've always had a goal that I wanted to average 10 wins a year and we've kept up with that. I'm really proud of that because that's not easy to do."

Though the Highlanders put just one goal on the board in the game, they generated plenty of opportunities, particularly in the second half when they totaled 17 shots. Revollo capitalized a second chance she got early in the half. Midfielder Hannah sent a service into the box from the right wing and Revollo got a shot off that was blocked by a VMI defender. The first-year forward quickly pounced on the loose ball and blasted one into the top of the net for the game-winner.

Minutes later, Revollo almost added an assist and she led Asyia Mitchell with a pass but the senior's shot from the left side went just wide. Shannon Nasca nearly scored when her shot from the middle of box was headed for the open net, but VMI defender Amy Horney knocked it away. Nasca, Sammie Shiflette, Jasmine Casarez and Jasmine Casarez each put attempts on frame that were saved and Mitchell hit the crossbar with a shot in the 75th minute.

Radford finished the game with a 26-7 shot advantage, including 10-3 on goal, and generated nine corner kicks, while not allowing one to VMI.  Nasca put five of her team-high six shots on frame. Casarez recorded five shots, while Gardner and Mitchell each had four.

"I was proud of the way we found a way to get chances," Sohrabi said. "We showed a lot of persistence, got a lot of balls in and I thought our forwards were really dangerous and did a great job."

Katie McCormick did not have a lot of work throughout the night, but finished with three saves, including a diving stop in the 71st minute. It was her second clean sheet of the season and the fourth of her career. The Highlanders have now shut out the Keydets in five straight meetings since 2010.

Radford will now hit the road for its next two games, beginning at USC Upstate Sunday at 2 p.m. The Highlanders won the only two prior matchups but the teams have not played since 2008.
