WOMEN’S SOCCER PULLS OUT 2-1 WIN AT USC UPSTATE

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Radford women's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals to rally for a 2-1 victory at USC Upstate Sunday afternoon.

The Highlanders tied the game in the 54th minute and got the go-ahead goal in the 78th minute to improve to 4-2 on the season and notch their second road win in as many contests.

Both tallies were credited as own goals off of USC Upstate defenders, but perseverance paid off for Radford as they mounted attacks after falling behind despite controlling the play for the majority of the first half.

The equalizer came when senior Asyia Mitchell raced to a loose ball with Upstate goalkeeper Ellen Bright. Mitchell was able to kick it forward toward the goal and Upstate's Ciara Murphy tried to clear it away, but instead knocked it over the line.

The Highlanders got the game-winner when a cross into the box intended for sophomore forward McKensey Ziegler was headed in by Spartan defender Maddie Little.

Radford goalkeeper Katie McCormick then made a pair of saves four minutes apart to preserve the lead and a final Upstate attempt went wide in the 89th minute. McCormick finished the game with seven stops.

"Upstate is a much-improved team that are tough to break down and get quality chances against," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "I loved our persistence in the attack, especially from our captains (Mitchell and Hannah Duff). That being said, we have to be more tactically aware as the game changes."

Each team finished with 13 shots, but the Highlanders had a 10-4 advantage in the first half, including the contest's first five. Freshman Ana Revollo and Mitchell each put early attempts on frame and Mitchell hit the crossbar – the second time in as many games – in the 31st minute. Mitchell recorded a team-high four shots.

Upstate (1-4-1) got its lone goal in the 42nd minute on a shot by Alexa Hone off of a corner kick by Kenzie Major. Spartans' goalkeeper Ellen Bright was then able make a good save in the final seconds of the half on a shot by Ziegler, who made her season debut.

Radford will now have almost a full week of preparation before its next game, as it hits the road again to play at Tennessee Tech next Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
