GAME INFORMATION

  • Records: UNC Asheville (16-4, 9-2 Big South) | Radford (10-10, 6-5 Big South)

RADFORD, Va. – Radford led for almost 30 minutes, before a late second-half surge by UNC Asheville handed the Highlanders a 54-46 loss inside the Dedmon Center, Saturday afternoon.

Janayla White filled up the stat sheet for the Highlanders, finishing with 12 points, 17 rebounds, five blocks and four steals. It was her fifth straight double-double and seventh overall. She is the only Big South women's basketball player to average a double-double at this point in the season.

After a Gaby Gilmore jumper, RU controlled a 37-26 lead with 3:31 remaining in the third quarter, its largest lead of the contest.

However, the Bulldogs responded in a big way. Trailing by 11 points, UNC Asheville made its run, closing out the third stanza on a 15-3 run. The run was sparked by Tianna Knuckles' back-to-back 3-pointers.

Despite the run, the Highlanders controlled a 40-38 lead heading into the final quarter. The first three minutes saw both squads struggle to find their touch. The Bulldogs took the lead on a Knuckles 3-pointer (41-40) at the 7:31 mark and never looked back, outscoring the Highlanders, 31-9, in the final 13 minutes of the second half.

Radford will look to end its three-game skid on Monday, traveling to Conway, S.C., facing off against Coastal Carolina. Tipoff is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start inside The HTC Center. The Highlanders held the Chanticleers to a minimal 23.9 percent from the field in a 61-45 win on Dec. 29.

QUOTABLE
  • "We really struggled to get in a flow, offensively. I thought they did a really good job mixing up their pressures. We got really tentative against their pressure, but we got some good looks in the fourth quarter. We just could not execute. You have to credit UNC Asheville on making the big shots and hustle plays. This is the type of game to expect against a team at the top of the conference standings." ~ Radford head coach, Mike McGuire.
