RADFORD STAGES DRAMATIC RALLY, BUT DROPS SECOND STRAIGHT OT DECISION



RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team rallied from a two-goal second-half deficit to force overtime with a score in the 90th minute, but Campbell struck early in the extra period to come away with a 3-2 victory Wednesday night at Cupp Stadium.
 
Abby Gardner netted the tying goal for the Highlanders (6-6, 4-2) off an assist by Jessica Wollmann with just 17 seconds left in regulation.
 
However, Campbell leading scorer Payton Ormsby put a shot in from the middle of the box in the first minute of overtime to give the Fighting Camels (8-6, 4-2) the win and spoil the comeback.
 
Trailing 2-0 after the Fighting Camels dominated the first 45 minutes, Radford turned the tables in the second half, controlling much of the possession and nearly getting on the board when Wollmann ripped a shot off the crossbar. However, four minutes later, Nelia Perez was taken down in the box, drawing a penalty kick and Jordan Lundin put the shot into the upper corner for her first goal of the season to make it 2-1.
 
The Highlanders then generated four corner kicks over the next 20 minutes and nearly scored on a couple of them. Nicole Ray's shot toward the left side was saved by the Campbell keeper and Cassidy Ratliff's deflection at the back post off a pass from Perez went just wide.
 
Campbell then held possession for several minutes and was able to keep it away from the Highlanders up until the final minute. Radford got the ball at that point and was able to work it down to Wollmann on the right side. She then fed Gardner with a pass just into the box and Gardner was able to slip her shot past the keeper inside the near post for her first collegiate goal.
 
Campbell, though, got possession to start overtime and Nicole Connolly found Ormsby in the box with a pass from the right side leading to the game winner.
 
The Fighting Camels built their 2-0 lead quickly with goals in the seventh and eighth minutes. Allie Hopkins headed home a rebound of a shot that hit the crossbar after a corner kick. Alexa Genas then converted a penalty kick after a teammate was taken down in the box on a breakaway.
 
Radford started to mount an attack late in the half, creating three corner kicks, and carried the momentum through the break, outshooting Campbell 11-4 in the second half. The Fighting Camels had a 17-13 edge in the game, including 8-6 on goal. The Highlanders won the corner kick battle 10-7.
 
"I give credit to Campbell for finishing the game," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "It's difficult when the other team scores two goals in the second half and you have to come back in overtime. But it was a tale of two halves. Campbell came out ready to play and defensively we were poor on a set piece and poor off a flick on a punt. In the second half, we played really well. I thought we moved the ball well, kept battling, had a lot of resiliency and scored two nice goals."
 
Radford plays its next two matches on the road, beginning with a 7 p.m. match at Presbyterian on Saturday.
