RADFORD DROPS REGULAR-SEASON FINALE TO HIGH POINT

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team was unable to overcome a pair of first-half goals and fell to High Point 2-0 in its regular-season finale Saturday night at Cupp Stadium.

High Point (9-5-2, 6-1-1) capitalized on its only two shot attempts of the opening half, finding the net in the 22nd and 37th minutes, on its way to taking over first place in the Big South.

Radford finished the regular season at 7-8 overall and 5-4 in the conference and will now wait to see who it will be matched up against in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament. Pairings will be announced after the final games are completed Tuesday night.

Sydney Chervenic played the entire 90 minutes for Radford in goal and recorded six saves. The senior and fellow classmates Miranda Carlson, Lexi Denny and Hannah Duff were honored prior to their final home match.

The Highlanders came out strong on Senior Night, controlling much of the possession in the opening half, outshooting the Panthers 7-2 and generating four corner kicks, but were unable to take advantage. Early on, Jessica Wollmann had an attempt from the right side go high and Jasmine Casarez had a point-blank attempt that was blocked. At the end of the half, Jordan Lundin got a shot off of from the middle of the box after a Casarez corner kick, but it went high.

In between, Big South leading goal scorer Kelsey Perrell got High Point on the board, deflecting in a cross toward the back post for her ninth tally of the season. Alex Denny added the other goal, as she took a pass inside the box and one-touched a shot into the net.

Radford had its best chance of the night early in the second half, trying to cut the deficit in half. Nelia Perez made a run up the right side and sent a cross into the box that found its way to Cassidy Ratliff at the back post, but her attempt also went over the goal.

The Highlanders recorded a pair of shots on goal later in the half, but Panthers keeper Alex Hank made the saves to notch her seventh shutout of the season. It is the first time this season that Radford was held off the scoreboard in back-to-back matches. High Point finished with a 17-11 shots advantage, including 8-3 on goal. Radford had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

"I thought we played well for a while and then they scored," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "I thought we played well for a while and then they scored again. The second half was a pretty even game. I was proud of our effort and I was proud of the way our seniors played. I thought we had a good gameplan, but sometimes it just doesn't go your way. But we look forward to the tournament."
