RADFORD EXTENDS WIN, HOME SHUTOUT STREAKS WITH 1-0 VICTORY

RADFORD, Va. – Jessica Wollmann scored a first-half goal and Radford's defense withstood a strong Longwood attack to make it stand up for the Highlanders' fourth straight home shutout in a 1-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Cupp Stadium.

With its fourth consecutive win, Radford improved to 6-4 overall and remained in first place in the Big South at a perfect 4-0, improving on its best conference start since the 2013 campaign.

Wollmann tallied her third goal of the season with an assist from Jasmine Casarez in the 24th minute as the two hooked up for a pretty combination play. After taking a pass by Jordan Lundin from the near sideline, Wollmann fed one to Casarez toward the middle of the field, cut outside and got the ball back from her teammate near the right corner of the box. She then put a shot over the leaping Longwood keeper into the upper corner.

Longwood controlled most of the possession in the game and finished with a 21-7 advantage in shots. However, the Highlanders kept many of them at a long distance and Courtenay Kaplan was there when needed, recording eight saves to notch her fourth clean sheet. Radford has now gone 408 consecutive minutes on the Cupp Stadium field without allowing a goal.

Kaplan made six of her saves in the first half, including a deflection on a dangerous shot inside the six-yard box in the 22nd minute just before Wollmann's goal. The Highlander defense also helped her out by blocking three attempts, including one by reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week Hannah Duff on a free kick from the top of the arc in the 42nd minute.

Early in the second half, Abby Gardner nearly made it 2-0 as she saw that Longwood keeper Maria Kirby was well out on the field and lofted a high shot from 40 yards out. Kirby was able to backtrack enough to leap and just tip it over the bar.

The Lancers continued to control play and keep the ball in the Radford defensive half much of the rest of the way, but were only able to create a couple of chances. Kaplan made a pair of saves in a six-minute span midway through, including diving to her left to deflect a low shot headed for the right corner in the 68th minute. Late in the game, the Highlanders were able to get control and take it deep in the Longwood defensive corner to run down time before blocking one more attempt in the 89th minute.

"I thought our defense played well, but they're a very good team," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "They're organized, have great shape and great possession-oriented team. I thought we played smart defensively and played to our strengths. We got the goal early in the first half on a great combination play and a nice upper-90 goal and after that it was about defending. I thought our back four was tremendous and Jordan in front of them was winning balls in the air when we needed it and Courtenay played great in goal and made a few big saves and touches on corners that made the difference."

Radford now takes its winning streak on the road as it travels to Gardner-Webb for a Saturday afternoon game scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
