HIGHLANDERS SUFFER FIRST BIG SOUTH DEFEAT IN OVERTIME

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford women's soccer team saw its four-match Big South Conference win streak come to an end Saturday evening with a 1-0 overtime loss at Gardner-Webb.

The Highlanders dropped to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while Gardner-Webb won its second straight 1-0 decision to improve to 6-7-2 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Justine Ibarra provided the game-winning goal on the first shot of overtime in the 94th minute as she put her attempt from just outside the box into the upper right corner of the net.

Gardner-Webb finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots for the match, including 9-4 in the second half and overtime. Radford had a 6-4 edge in attempts on goal, but the Runnin' Bulldogs totaled seven corners kicks to three for the Highlanders.

Courtney Kaplan recorded three saves for RU, while Keely Brown had the six stops for GWU.

Radford got its offense going during the last 10 minutes of the opening half, recording four shots. Within the span of less than a minute, the Highlanders put two attempts on goal and a header by Nicole Ray off of a Jordan Lundin corner kick caromed off the post. In the 43rd minute, Abby Gardner got a head another corner, but the attempt was wide.

In the second half, Radford was on target with each of its four shots - two by Gardner, one by Lundin and one by Hannah Duff - but couldn't get any of them past Brown, who posted her fifth shutout of the season.

Gardner led the way with three shots in the match. Ibarra's goal came on her fourth shot of the game, sharing team-high honors. Despite the loss, Radford held an opponent scoreless in the first half for the seventh straight game.

"A lot of lessons for our team to learn today," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "We have to be more focused and consistent on the road. Give Gardner-Webb credit. They wanted it and deserved it more today."

Radford is back at home on Wednesday as it welcomes Campbell for a 7 p.m. match at Cupp Stadium.
