RADFORD LOOKS TO BOUNCE BACK TUESDAY NIGHT AT MERCER



SETTING THE STAGE
  • Radford continues its week-long, four-game road trip Tuesday night against another formidable mid-major opponent, traveling to Macon, Ga. take on Mercer in a 7 p.m. contest.
  • Series: First meeting
  • Radford vs. SoCon opponents: The Highlanders are 20-13 in games against teams in the Southern Conference at the time and 35-38 against current SoCon programs. More than half of the latter were games against VMI.
  • The game will be broadcast on American Sports Network, which can be found locally on WSET-2 (Channel 159 on Shentel Digital HD).

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 1-2
  • Through three games, Caleb Tanner is leading the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 ppg off the bench. He has connected on 7 of 17 3-point attempts.
  • Ed Polite, Jr. returned to the lineup against Akron after missing one game and posted his second eight-rebound outing of the season, while also recording all of five of the team's steals – one shy of his career high.
  • Devonnte Holland is now 13 of 14 from the field and is second on the squad with 9.7 ppg, along with sharing second with 6.3 rebounds per contest.
  • Devin Cooper is third in scoring at 8.7 ppg, while three others are averaging 7.0 or higher.
  • The quartet of Tanner, Cooper, Justin Cousin and Donald Hicks are a combined 29 of 32 from the free-throw line.
  • Backcourt newcomers Hicks and Christian Bradford are shooting a combined 44 percent (17 of 39) from the field. Hicks also is tied for team-high honors with eight offensive rebounds.
  • Radford holds a 0.0 rebounding margin so far, both grabbing and allowing 38.3 rebounds per game.

SCOUTING MERCER
  • Record: 2-1
  • Mercer is coming off an 80-67 comeback victory over Georgia Southern on Sunday in front of a sellout crowd at home.
  • The Bears closed the game on a 25-4 run over the final seven minutes and put all five starters in double figures.
  • Ria'n Holland, a junior college transfer, had 18 points in the victory and has led the team in scoring in each game, including 21 in a loss to Florida.
  • Holland is averaging 21.0 ppg, while shooting 51 percent from the field, including 12 of 28 3-pointers.
  • Demetre Rivers, another junior guard, is second on the team with 11.0 ppg, while junior forward Stephon Jelks has contributed 10.0 ppg and a team-high 5.7 rebounds. Jelks was the team's second-leading scorer last year.
  • Jordan Strawberry, son of former major league baseball standout Darryl Strawberry, leads the team with 15 assists.
  • The Bears have limited their opponents to 35 percent shooting and 65.3 ppg in the three games.
  • Mercer has had five straight winning seasons, including 20-plus win campaigns and 19 victories each of the last two years since moving from the Atlantic Sun to the SoCon.
