RADFORD HOSTS TENNESSEE TECH IN FIRST MEETING SINCE 1987



SETTING THE STAGE
  • After playing their first two games on the road, Radford opens the home portion of 2016-17 schedule with a pre-Thanksgiving appetizer against Tennessee Tech in the first meeting between the two foes since 1987. Action is slated to tip at 4 p.m.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 1-1
  • Radford picked up its first win of the season on Nov. 19, holding off a late second half charge by Davidson for a 44-40 victory.
  • The win marks the seventh consecutive season that Radford has collected at least one win in their first two games of the season, dating back to the 2010-11 season. Radford improves to 4-3 in the all-time series, versus Davidson riding a two-game winning streak.
  • Jayda Worthy finished with a game-high 14 points, marking the 23rd time she has scored at least 10 points in her career and the 11th time she had led Radford in points.
  • Worthy finished with two blocks, giving her sixth through the first two games and 45 in her career.
  • Through two games, Worthy leads the Big South in blocks.
  • Destinee Walker followed with her second straight game of 12 points. Walker made 5 of 7 field goals for a new career high, including a career-high two made 3-pointers.
  • Lydia Rivers, Worthy and Walker combined for 23 of Radford's 39 rebounds.
  • The Highlander defense has allowed 110 points through games, ranking second in the Big South with 55.0 points allowed per game.
  • In addition, opponents are only shooting 31.6 percent against the Radford defense, which ranks second in the conference. Opposing teams are 37 for 117 from the floor with only six baskets coming on 3-pointers.
  • Radford's last matchup against an opponent from the Volunteer State came on Dec. 2, 2008 in a 78-41 loss at Vanderbilt. The Highlanders last win against the state of Tennessee came in a 73-67 win over ETSU on Dec. 20, 2007.
 
SCOUTING TENNESSEE TECH
  • Record: 1-3
  • The Golden Eagles are currently on a two-game skid since their first win of the season on Nov. 14 in a 54-41 win over NAIA foe Tennessee Wesleyan.
  • Tennessee Tech's only player averaging double-figures is Yaktavia Hickson, who is averaging 15.5 points per game, ranking sixth in the Ohio Valley.
  • Hickson has poured in double-digit points in all four games on the season, including season-high 17 points twice.
  • The junior is shooting 46 percent (23-50) from the field and 75 percent (12-16) from the charity stripe.
  • Tennessee Tech has five players averaging five-plus points on the season.
  • Hannah Goolsby is the Golden Eagles leading rebounder with 20 rebounds through four games, averaging 5.0 per game.
  • Point guard Akia Harris is the Golden Eagles leading offensive rebounding, corralling 11 offensive boards.
  • Harris turned in a strong performance in her fourth collegiate game as Tennessee Tech dropped a 73-62 decision to Middle Tennessee State on Nov. 19. The freshman dished out a season-high 12 dimes. She is averaging 3.8 assists per game, ranking seventh in the OVC.
  • The matchup against the Highlanders is the first of three contests against Big South foes. Tennessee Tech will travel to UNC Asheville for a Nov. 25 matchup and Winthrop on Nov. 29.  

UP NEXT
  • Radford continues their homestand with a 2 p.m. matchup against NCAA Division II Davis & Elkins on Saturday.
  • The Highlanders and Senators have not met since Feb. 1, 1985. Radford came out victorious 72-53.
