RADFORD TRAVELS TO DEFENDING CAA CHAMP UNCW SATURDAY



SETTING THE STAGE
  • The Radford men's basketball team heads back out on the road for another mid-major test, playing at defending CAA Tournament champion UNC Wilmington Saturday at 2 p.m.
  • Series History: This will be ninth meeting between the programs, with team owning perfect 4-0 home records.
  • Last meeting: Radford prevailed 69-67 last season on a buzzer-beating basket by Kion Brown.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 4-5
  • Radford has been off since an impressive 68-56 victory over Elon last Saturday, when it held the Phoenix 26 points below their season average.
  • The Highlanders have allowed 67 points or fewer in five of their last six games, with the only exception coming at North Carolina.
  • Ed Polite, Jr. has three double-doubles on the season and is now averaging just under that for the season, leading the Big South with 9.8 rebounds per game, while tallying 9.0 points. He is also third in the league steals per game (2.1).
  • Polite, Jr. and Randy Phillips have combined for 51 offensive rebounds, ranking first and fourth in the conference, respectively.
  • Coming off his career-high six-block performance against Elon, Darius Bolstad is tied for second among Big South players with 12 rejections, despite playing in just six games.
  • Justin Cousin has scored 14 points in each of the last two contests, while connecting on 7 of 15 shots, including 6 of 12 3-pointers. He is now averaging 8.2 ppg, while sharing the team's assists lead.
  • Caleb Tanner is tied for third in the conference with 22 made 3-pointers and fourth in per game average (2.4).
  • Radford is 4-1 this season when shooting 40 percent or better, 4-1 when scoring at least 60 points and 4-2 when outrebounding its opponent.
 
SCOUTING UNC WILMINGTON
  • Record: 9-1
  • UNC Wilmington has won six straight games, capped by a 96-75 victory at Campbell Wednesday night.
  • The Seahawks are ranked fifth in the latest CollegeInsider.com mid-major poll and entered the week 10th overall in the NCAA in RPI.
  • Their lone loss was a 68-63 neutral-site decision to Middle Tennessee on Nov. 25.
  • UNCW ranks 10th in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 88.6 points per game, with four players averaging in double figures and one just below.
  • Chris Flemmings leads the team and ranks second in the CAA with 18.2 ppg. He is shooting 50 percent from the field, including a team-best 23 3-pointers. He scored a team-high 16 points in the game last season.
  • Denzel Ingram ranks second in the CAA and 34th nationally in assists per game (5.7), while adding 12.1 ppg. He earned CAA Player of the Week honors after hitting a game-winning shot at St. Bonaventure on Sunday.
  • C.J. Bryce is second on the team in scoring with 17.8 ppg, after a 26-point outing against Campbell. He is shooting 52 percent and scored 14 against the Highlanders last year.
  • Devontae Cacok is averaging 13.9 ppg, along with 10.0 rebounds, which ranks second in the CAA. He is also third in the NCAA in field-goal percentage, making 60 of 76 attempts (79 percent).
  • Defensively, UNCW is 24th nationally in forced turnovers with 17.0 per game, with Flemmings second in the CAA in steals (1.9 per game).
  • Head coach Kevin Keatts earned CAA Coach of the Year honors in each of his first two seasons.

  • Radford will play its final non-conference road game and second against a ranked opponent, traveling to No. 12 West Virginia Tuesday night.
