RADFORD SET TO SQUARE OFF WITH NO. 3 NORTH CAROLINA SUNDAY



SETTING THE STAGE
  • The Radford men's basketball program will make its first-ever visit to Chapel Hill, N.C., Sunday afternoon, taking on third-ranked North Carolina at 2 p.m. inside the Dean Smith Center.
  • It will be Highlanders' second meeting against the Tar Heels, with the other matchup coming in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. North Carolina prevailed in the game, 101-58 in the game, on its way to winning the national championship
  • Sunday's game will be broadcast live regionally by Raycom on Fox Sports South and is also available on ESPN3's ACC Extra in some areas.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 3-4
  • Radford put together its most complete all-around performance of the season against a Division I opponent in Wednesday's 74-67 home victory over VMI.
  • The Highlanders shot 50 percent, including 44 percent on 3-pointers, recorded 17 assists on 24 field goals, and limited to VMI to 38 percent shooting in the second half.
  • Caleb Tanner's career-high 17 points was his third double-digit outing of the season and marked the sixth time in 27 career games that he made four 3-pointers.
  • The sophomore from Floyd County leads the team at 10.6 ppg and is second in the Big South with a 46.3 3-point percentage (19 of 41).
  • Ed Polite, Jr. posted his second double-double of the year and is averaging just under that for the season with 9.5 ppg and a conference-leading 9.7 rebounds per contest. He has totaled 34 boards in the last three outings and ranks 21st nationally in offensive rebounds per game.
  • Polite, Jr. also ranks fourth in the Big South in steals per game, totaling a team-high 14.
  • Donald Hicks had reached double-figures in three of his five starts and is third on the team at 7.9 ppg.
  • Christian Bradford has 13 assists in three games as the starting point guard, while scoring 7.1 ppg for the season.
  • Defensively, Radford has limited its opponents to 64.0 ppg over the last four games.
  • In addition, Polite, Jr.'s work on the glass, Randy Phillips has 17 of his 30 rebounds on the offensive end.
  • Head coach Mike Jones announced that Devin Cooper will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL.  
 
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA
  • Record: 7-1
  • North Carolina is coming off of its first loss of the season, a 76-67 decision at No. 13 Indiana Wednesday night.
  • The Tar Heels scored over 90 points in five of their first six games and are 10th in the NCAA on the season at 89.6 per contest, including a 107-point output against Oklahoma State. They are ninth in scoring margin at 22.8.
  • UNC also ranks third nationally in rebounding margin (15.1), sixth in rebounds per game (45.6), seventh in offensive rebounds per game (15.7) and 13th in assists per game (18.5).
  • Justin Jackson and Joel Berry II lead the team with 16.1 and 16.0 ppg, respectively, while combining to make 32 of 80 3-point attempts. Jackson had a game-high 21 points against Indiana.
  • Berry II was an All-ACC Preseason First Team pick this season and the MVP of last year's ACC Tournament. The junior point guard also dishes out 4.8 assists per game, while shooting 50 percent from the field.
  • The senior tandem of Kennedy Meeks and Isaiah Hicks lead the way on the inside. Meeks is third in the nation with 10.4 rebounds per game and second on the offensive end (4.3), while tallying 13.3 ppg. Hicks averages 13.6 points per contest and has made 45 of 69 shots (65 percent).
  • As a team, North Carolina shoots 50 percent from the field and 38 percent behind the arc.
  • Freshman Tony Bradley has contributed 9.9 ppg coming off the bench.
  • In his 14th season at North Carolina and 29th overall, Roy Williams had his 1,000th career game as a head coach in the Indiana loss.
  • The Tar Heels will be playing just their third home game of the season and first since Nov. 15.

  • Radford gets its longest break of the season so far before returning to action next Saturday at home against Elon, with tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
