ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A strong second-half effort wasn't enough for another Radford comeback as the Highlanders dropped a 58-48 decision to UNC Asheville Tuesday night in Big South action inside Kimmel Arena.

Alexis Jackson led Radford with a 12-point effort, scoring nine points in the second-half charge. Jayda Worthy joined Jackson in double figures, finishing with 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field.

Trailing 39-31 with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Highlanders made their move. Radford's surge was sparked by Destinee Walker's 3-pointer from the right wing, which pulled RU within 39-34 after three quarters of play.

The Walker 3-pointer was the beginning of a 9-2 run for the Highlanders, as back-to-back offensive rebounds and putbacks by Janayla White and Sydney Nunley gave Radford a 42-41 lead with 5:59 remaining in regulation. Nunley's basket gave RU its first lead since the 9:46 mark of the third quarter.

After watching its lead slip away, Asheville answered with a 3-pointer and layup by Chatori Major, which gave the Bulldogs a 46-42 lead with 3:42 remaining in the final stanza.

In her first collegiate start, Jackson gave the Highlanders another chance with a strong drive to the basket, pulling within 48-46 with just under three minutes remaining.

From there, Asheville converted seven of its 10 free-throw opportunities down the stretch to provide the final margin.

Radford returns to the Dedmon Center on Saturday for Senior Day against Longwood. Aisha Foy and Gaby Gilmore will be honored prior to the 2 p.m. tipoff. The Radford men play High Point at 4:30 p.m. as part of the Highlanders' only home doubleheader of the season.

QUOTABLE
  • "This is a tough way to lose a game. It was a tight game throughout. You have to credit Asheville toward the end of the game. We took the lead, 42-41, then they hit a couple threes that gave them some separation. From my perspective, we just have to be more disciplined on the offensive end. We lost a little of our focus in certain parts of tonight's game. That's where we have to grow. We are a young basketball team. We took the lead late on the team leading our league, but we just couldn't quite finish the job." ~ Radford head coach, Mike McGuire
