BLACKSBURG, Va. – Led by a runner-up finish in the pentathlon, Radford junior Jessica Shelton recorded a career all-around performance during Friday's opening day of the Big South Indoor Track and Field Championship at Rector Fieldhouse.
Shelton notched first-place finishes in two of the five events, including a personal best in the long jump, en route to claiming All-Big South honors while compiling 3,446 points, the second-highest total in program history. The score bettered two of Elaine Derricott's totals from 2010 and is just behind only Derricott's 3,462 score from the Akron Invitational that season. Shelton's previous best of 3,194 ranks fifth at RU. The second-place finish in Friday's meet provided the Highlanders with eight of their 16 points on the first day.
Shelton started out the day by winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.89 seconds and added a fifth-place showing in the high jump, clearing 1.59 meters on her third attempt. She followed with a third place in the shot put with a distance of 10.77 meters on the second of her three throws.
Shelton then took a break from the pentathlon to compete in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles event and proceeded to clock a personal-best time of 8.84 and qualify fourth for Saturday's final.
Returning to the pentathlon, Shelton broke her previous-best long jump mark twice, capped by a distance of 5.37 meters (17-7.50) on her final jump. A 10th-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:42.40 was then enough to maintain her second-best overall standing in the competition.
Radford also enjoyed a good finish to the day as the distance medley relay team placed fourth. The quartet of Percie Lyons, McKenzie Schrank, Danyelle McDaniel and Courtney Burton combined to clock 12:33.57 and provide the Highlanders with five points.
Ashlen Veatch rounded out RU's scoring on the day, placing sixth in the weight throw with a top distance of 16.68 meters. Naihla Rose-Delia reset her personal-best in the eventh at 16.15 meters and finished ninth.
Back on the track, Cara Myrtle posted her fourth consecutive personal-best 400-meter team of the season and advanced to Saturday's final. Myrtle crossed the line in 57.54 second to qualify seventh.
Also for Radford, Monica Mallory recorded personal bests in three of her five pentathlon events (60 hurdles, high jump and shot put) and Sarah Riley had her best time in the 3,000 meters (10:55.03).
The meet resumes Saturday morning with the women getting started at 11 a.m. on the high jump. Radford stands seventh overall, but is just 19 points behind second place Coastal Carolina.
