SOFTBALL’S WINNING STREAK REACHES FIVE BEFORE LOSS

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Radford softball team won its fifth straight game, 5-4 over UMass Lowell, on Saturday before falling to host College of Charleston 6-1 in the nightcap of the Cougar Classic.

In their victory, the Highlanders (5-2) saw UMass Lowell take a 4-3 lead with three runs in the fifth, but answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and then went back ahead for good in the sixth.

Summer Robinson hit her first home run of the season with one out in the fifth to tie the game before an RBI double by Hannah Medlam provided the game-winning run. Medlam's double to left-center scored Nia Chiles, who had drawn a one-out walk before stealing second.

Kayla Huffman then struck out three batters in the top of the seventh to put the game away. She totaled five strikeouts in two hitless innings of relief to earn her first career victory. She and fellow freshman Haley Hutchins combined for 10 strikeouts in the game. Hutchins made her first start in an RU uniform and worked the first five innings.

Medlam recorded her first career multi-hit game, going 2 for 4, while Kayla Bishton also had two of the Highlanders' nine hits.

Radford took a 3-0 lead in the second inning as Marissa Yow led off with a double, Casey Burns followed with an RBI double, Bishton added a run-scoring single and Marissa Gagliano provided the third double of the inning, plating Bishton.

UMass Lowell got on the board with a run the top of third before taking its brief lead on a three-run double.

Becky Mantel provided the Highlanders' run against College of Charleston, hitting her second homer of the season in the sixth inning. The senior is now tied for seventh in program history with 25 home runs.

College of Charleston (6-5), which had posted a 12-3 five-inning win over Big South member Campbell on Friday, jumped out to an early lead against RU on a three-run homer by Valerie Cassell in the first inning. The Cougars then added one in the third and capped the scoring with two in the sixth.

Five different Highlanders recorded one hit in the game. Abby Morrow suffered her first loss since the season opener, allowing five hits in three innings.

Radford finishes off the tournament with two more games on Sunday, taking on Detroit at 1:30 p.m. and South Carolina State at 3:30 p.m.
