RADFORD RACKS UP 17 HITS IN 15-2 ROUT FOR SUNDAY SPLIT

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Radford softball team totaled 17 hits and scored 11 runs in the first two innings as it rolled to a 15-2 five-inning rout of South Carolina State to finish out the Cougar Classic on Sunday. The Highlanders rebounded from a 2-0 loss to Detroit in their first game of the day.

Marissa Yow went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Becky Mantel had three hits, one RBI and two runs scored. Alex Lang added two hits, including a two-run homer, while Marissa Gagliano, Hannah Medlam and Summer Robinson each tripled and had two hits. Freshman Lizzy Humes recorded her first career home run and fellow newcomer Lauren McIntyre notched the victory in her first appearance in the circle.

The 17 hits, which included 10 for extra bases, were the most for Radford since it totaled that amount on Mar. 28, 2010 against Charleston Southern.

After being held off the scoreboard by Detroit, the offense wasted no time getting going when it returned to the plate. Gagliano led off the game with a single, stole second, went to third on a hit by Medlam and scored on a wild pitch. Yow added an RBI double and Kayla Bishton's run-scoring single made it 3-0.

The Highlanders (6-3) then totaled eight runs on seven hits, including three triples, in the second inning. Nia Chiles got it started with a leadoff single before Gagliano and Medlam followed with back-to-back triples. After an RBI groundout by Mantel, Robinson tripled and scored on Yow's RBI single. Another run scored on an error before Whitney Davis hit an RBI double and Lang recorded her second career homer.

Radford then tacked on its final four runs in the fourth as Lang doubled and scored on Humes' home run, Mantel followed with a double, Robinson brought her home with an RBI single and Yow's RBI double capped off a five-hit day for her.

McInytre pitched all five innings, allowing five hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

In the first game, Radford outhit Detroit 5-4, but two of the Titans' came with two outs and drove in the runs. A pair of Highlander errors helped Detroit take a 1-0 lead in the fourth, and two infield singles around a groundout and a stolen base accounted for the other run in the seventh.

RU put a pair of runners on base in the third and seventh innings but were unable to convert. Yow was 2 for 3 with a double, and fellow freshman Devyn Trifari recorded her first hit as a Highlander. Abby Morrow suffered the tough loss, going the distance and allowing just one earned run while striking out four without a walk.

The Highlanders will return to action and play their first game close to home on Wednesday as they make the short drive over to Blacksburg and face Virginia Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
