RADFORD OPENS CONFERENCE PLAY WITH TWO WINS AT CHARLESTON SO.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford softball team started off Big South Conference play with a doubleheader sweep at Charleston Southern Sunday afternoon, notching 4-1 and 3-1 victories without trailing in either contest.

The Highlanders have now won seven of their last eight games and improved to 16-6 on the season.

Abby Morrow and Kayla Huffman combined to limit Charleston Southern (12-16) to a total of six hits, capped off by Huffman's career-best one-hit performance in the nightcap.

Radford put together a strong all-around performance in the opener as Casey Burns, Marissa Gagliano and Marissa Yow provided the offense and Morrow scattered five hits while being backed by great defense. Burns went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, scoring Gagliano both times, and Yow added a two-run homer.

The Highlanders scored in the first inning for the 10th time on the season, as Gagliano slid in safely coming from second base when Burns singled up the middle off the glove of the diving shortstop. Gagliano had led off the game with a single to left before stealing second – the first of her four stolen bases on the day.

Burns picked up her second RBI hit in the third inning, drilling a double over the centerfielder with two outs after Gagliano reached on a walk and advanced to second on an error.

Yow's two-run homer then made it a 4-0 lead in the fifth. After Becky Mantel kept the inning alive by drawing a two-out walk, Yow hammered a pitch over the fence in straight away center for her third of the season.

That was more than enough run support for Morrow, especially with the Highlanders making several great fielding plays. In the bottom of the first, Burns snagged a one-hop grounder for the third out with runners second and third. Hannah Medlam then made a diving catch near the left-field line in the third inning and Morrow started a 1-6-3 inning-double play in the fourth. The following inning, Nia Chiles went to her right and laid out to snag a liner up the middle.

Morrow (9-5) did not allow an earned run in a compete game for the third time this season and didn't issue a walk for the eighth time in her last nine starts, while recording one strikeout. Charleston Southern got its only run in the sixth inning on a one-out double, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly.

In the second game, Huffman held the Buccaneers hitless for 6 1/3 innings before an infield single by Lexie Vanada on a grounder toward the middle that took a bad hop past Gagliano. Like Morrow, Huffman (5-1) did not allow an earned run or a walk, and she struck out four.

RU got on the board in the second inning as Hannah Medlam delivered a two-out single past the shortstop, plating Kayla Bishton, who had singled and moved to second on a groundout.

The Buccaneers were able to tie it at 1-1 in the third, using a hit batter, two sacrifices and a throwing error.

However, the Highlanders regained the lead in the fifth on a two-out RBI double by Mantel. Gagliano reached on a throwing error and got into scoring position with her final stolen base. Mantel then fouled off several pitches with two strikes before lining one to the gap in right-center to score Gagliano for the third time on the day.

Radford added its final run in the seventh as Chiles beat out an infield single, stole second and scored on an RBI single to center by Yow following an intentional walk to Mantel.

The Highlanders will try for the three-game sweep when the teams wrap up the series Monday at 2 p.m.
