RADFORD, Va. –  Radford was unable to manage any offense as Hartford collected a 12-0 win in the Highlanders 2016 home opener. The Hawks pumped out an astonishing 18 hits in the shutout win, Friday afternoon at RU Baseball Stadium.

Hartford struck early as Chris DelDebbio singled to short, advancing to second on a Chris Coia throwing error. Erik Ostberg followed with a single up the middle, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The top of the second inning saw the Hawks blow the game wide open, scoring five runs on five hits and one RU error. The inning was highlighted by an Aaron Wilson two-run single on well executed base running by the Hawks.

The Hawks added two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings, extending their lead to 10-0.

Not to be overshadowed by Hartford offense, Kyle Gauthier carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, before Shane Johnsonbaugh lined a two-out double off the right field wall to give Radford its first base runner of the game.

Adding two more runs in the eighth inning, Hartford controlled a 12-0 lead.

Simon Palenchar led off the bottom half of the inning with a single to center field. The Highlanders opportunity was short lived as Palenchar was erased on a double play groundout by Johnathan Gonzalez.

Hartford used two strong innings out of its bullpen as the Hawks cruised to a 12-0 victory.

Radford and Hartford return to action tomorrow for game two of the three-game series. The Highlanders will send Zack Ridgely to the mound and the Hawks will start David Drouin in the 2 p.m. matchup.

QUOTABLE
  • "Hartford's starter was really good today, he filled up the strike zone and located the ball well. We didn't compete for many at-bats and didn't play enough defense early to calm the game down. We didn't hit the ball hard enough today. Right now, we are not playing well and it's our job to fix it. Tomorrow our guys need to come out and be better, just play Radford baseball."~ Radford head coach, Joe Raccuia
