SOFTBALL DOWNS VIRGINIA FOR SATURDAY SWEEP

WILMINGTON, N.C. – With Marissa Gagliano and Becky Mantel leading the way offensively, Radford made it two for two Saturday at the Seahawk Softball Showcase, doubling up Virginia for a 6-3 win in the afternoon finale.

Gagliano went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, while Mantel also had three hits and provided the game-deciding RBIs with a two-run single in the fourth inning as Radford improved to 8-4 on the season. Summer Robinson added two of the Highlanders' 11 hits, including an RBI triple, and Marissa Yow drove in two runs.

Kayla Huffman pitched five innings to earn her second victory, with fellow freshman Lauren McIntyre finishing it off for her first collegiate save. Huffman allowed two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

As it did in its victory over UNC Wilmington earlier Saturday, Radford grabbed a 1-0 in the first inning as Gagliano hit a leadoff single and scored on Robinson's two-out triple down the right-field line.

The Highlanders made it 3-0 in the third inning, and again Gagliano got the offense started with a single up the middle and a stolen base. She then scored on a throwing error after an infield single to the left side by Mantel, who advanced to third and scored on an RBI single by Yow.

Virginia scored all of its runs in the top of the fourth on four hits, including a two-run homer, to tie the game. However, Radford answered right back to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning on Mantel's single to left. Alex Lang and Nia Chiles drew walks to start the frame and moved up to second and third on a groundout by Gagliano before Mantel delivered the two-out go-ahead hit.

Yow's RBI groundout in the sixth inning capped the scoring. Gagliano and Mantel set the table again with singles and moved up on another Virginia throwing error.

McIntyre then closed out the game in the top of the seventh, with help from a groundball double play turned by second baseman Chiles.

Radford will face both UNC Wilmington and Virginia again on Sunday, beginning at 12:30 p.m. against the host Seahawks.
