RADFORD RALLIES BY UNC WILMINGTON, FALLS TO VIRGINIA

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Radford softball team settled for a split of its Sunday doubleheader at the Seahawk Showcase, defeating host UNC Wilmington 6-3 before dropping a 3-2 decision to Virginia.

The Highlanders went 3-1 in the tournament and now stand 9-5 on the season.

Kayla Bishton and Marissa Yow led the way in Radford's second straight victory over UNCW. Bishton went 3 for 4 with a double and the tying home run in the sixth inning, while Yow followed that with the go-ahead, two-out single with the bases loaded. Yow drove in three runs in the game and had two hits, including her seventh double of the season. RU collected nine hits as a team.

Freshmen pitchers Lauren McIntyre and Haley Hutchins combined to limit the Seahawks to just five hits, with McIntyre notching the victory after three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits.

Radford took a 1-0 lead in the first on Yow's RBI double to the wall in left-center. UNC Wilmington (12-6) tied it in the bottom of the inning on a walk, wild pitch, sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly.

The Highlanders went back ahead 2-1 in the second as Nia Chiles used her speed to beat out a bouncer back to the pitcher for an RBI infield hit. Alex Lang scored on the play after reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing to third on a throwing error. The Seahawks then took their only lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run single that followed a hit batter, a sacrifice and a single.

However, Bishton went the opposite way to hit her first homer of the season, just inside the left-field foul pole leading off the sixth. Lang, Marissa Gagliano and Becky Mantel then drew walks to load the bases with two outs and Yow got a blooper to drop just in front of the diving UNCW centerfielder for a two-RBI hit, with Mantel also coming home on a throwing error.

Against Virginia, Radford scored in its first at-bat for the fourth straight time in the tournament. Summer Robinson's two-out RBI single scored Mantel after she was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a groundout. Virginia quickly tied it on a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first and took the lead with a single, stolen base and two groundouts.

The Highlanders evened it at 2 in the third as Chiles led off with a double down the left-field line and scored on an RBI double to center by Mantel. However, the Cavaliers came back to score the game-deciding run in the bottom of the inning, as a pair of two-out singles were followed by a Radford error.

Radford totaled six hits in the game, including one each in the final three innings, but was unable to move those runners. Abby Morrow pitched the complete game, again taking a close loss, allowing just five hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Highlanders return to action on Wednesday as they travels to Norfolk State for a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.
