RADFORD NOTCHES DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP WITH PAIR OF SHUTOUTS

NORFOLK, Va. – Abby Morrow, Kayla Huffman and Lauren McIntyre combined to allow just eight hits, while keeping Norfolk State off the scoreboard as Radford recorded 8-0 and 3-0 victories in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.

Morrow tossed a two-hitter in the opener and Huffman pitched into the seventh in the second game before McIntyre worked out of a jam to preserve the second shutout as the Highlanders improved to 11-5, one win shy of their 2015 total.

Offensively, Radford scored runs in five of its six turns at bat in the first game, while collecting 10 hits. Nia Chiles went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and three runs scored. Marissa Gagliano added two hits, two RBIs and two runs, while Summer Robinson also recorded a pair of hits and drove in one run.

Morrow struck out five and extended her streak of no walks allowed to six games in a row. The only hits she allowed were an infield single with two outs in the fifth and a single to left with one out in the sixth.

RU got on the board in the first inning for the sixth straight game as Becky Mantel singled to left, stole second and scored when Robinson dropped a two-out single down the left-field line.

Chiles then made it 2-0 by homering to lead off the third, putting one over the fence in left-center for her first of the year and third of her career.

The Highlanders added another run in the fourth as Casey Burns doubled in front of the diving leftfielder, Kayla Bishton followed with a single and Whitney Davis' sacrifice fly to deep center plated Burns.

Radford then used three hits and aggressive baserunning to score two more in the fifth. Chiles nearly got her second home run of the game, but settled for a leadoff double off the top of the fence in right. She scored from second on Gagliano's infield single past the pitcher. Mantel was then hit by a pitch and Robinson singled to load the bases before Burns' sac fly to left scored Gagliano.

RU capped the scoring with a two-out rally in the sixth. Chiles again got it started with a walk, stole second and came home on Gagliano's RBI single to center. Gagliano advanced to second on an error on the play, went to third on a passed ball and scored on fielding error. An RBI single by Marissa Yow then provided the eighth run, allowing the Highlanders to end it one inning early.

Radford did not score in the first inning of the second game, but did get on the board in the second on a two-run homer by Davis. She hit her second of the season over the left-field fence two batters after Burns singled.

The Highlanders then took advantage of Norfolk State error in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. A grounder off the bat of Mantel hit off the glove of the shortstop and the ball got past the leftfielder, allowing Mantel to reach third. After Yow walked, Robinson capitalized with a two-out RBI double to the gap in left-center.

Like Morrow, Huffman (3-0) held the Spartans scoreless for the first three innings and then pitched out of a jam in the sixth, getting consecutive popups with runners on second and third. She finished the game with five hits allowed, struck out a career-high six and walked two.

After Norfolk got a leadoff single in the seventh, McIntyre came on and the Spartans got a bunt single and an error to put runners on second and third with no outs. However, she followed by getting a flyout to shallow center and two groundouts to notch her second save of the season.

The Highlanders totaled seven hits in that victory, with Burns and Bishton each recording two.

Radford makes its final road trip prior to its home opener when it travels to Western Carolina on Saturday for a doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m.
