RADFORD HOLDS ON FOR 4-3 WIN OVER UNC WILMINGTON

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Radford softball team opened play in the Seahawk Showcase Saturday morning with a 4-3 victory over host UNC Wilmington.

Becky Mantel went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Casey Burns returned to the lineup after missing three games and had two hits and an RBI. Marissa Yow added two hits as Radford totaled 10 in the game. Abby Morrow pitched five innings to notch the victory and Kayla Huffman pitched the last two to earn her first career save.

The Highlanders will next face Virginia Saturday, with first pitch tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m.

Radford got on the board in the top of the first. Marissa Gagliano led off with a single to left side, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout to the right side by Hannah Medlam. Mantel then worked a 3-2 count before poking an RBI single up the middle.

Morrow then worked out of a jam in the bottom of the frame. After a third-strike wild pitch, an error and an infield hit loaded the bases, she got an inning-ending groundout to third.

However, the Seahawks used a two-out double and RBI single to even the game in the third. UNCW threatened again in the fourth, starting with a leadoff double. Morrow retired the next two batters before Gagliano was able to make a diving stop on a ball toward the middle to prevent a run from scoring. She then went to her left again to field an inning-ending groundout with runners on second and third.

The Highlanders regained the lead with three runs on four hits in the fifth. Nia Chiles led off with an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored when Mantel beat out a grounder to short for an infield hit with two outs. After a Mantel steal and walk to Yow, Robinson and Burns delivered two-out RBI singles to make it 4-1.

UNCW got a run back in the bottom of the inning on another two-out hit and closed the gap to one with a run in the sixth after Huffman entered. However, the Highlanders got a key forceout at third on the run-scoring play and Huffman followed by getting a pair of flyouts to keep RU in front. She then worked a perfect seventh to close it out.
