RADFORD TAKES TWO AT HAMPTON, EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO SIX

HAMPTON, Va. – Summer Robinson hit two home runs and totaled six RBIs, while Abby Morrow and Lauren McIntyre allowed just three hits between them as the Radford softball team swept a doubleheader at Hampton on Wednesday with 6-0 and 5-1 victories.

The Highlanders (26-15) have now won a season-high six straight games to improve to 26-15 on the year.

Playing close to her hometown of Chesapeake, Robinson hit a pair of two-run homers in the opener – her first career multi-home run game – and provided the first two runs of the nightcap with a two-run triple.

Morrow recorded her third two-hitter of the season and second in her last three starts en route to her fifth shutout of the year in the first game. She notched six strikeouts – all in the first three innings.

McIntyre followed that up with one-hit performance and a career-high eight strikeouts in the second game.

Becky Mantel also keyed the offense in the opener, going 2 for 3 with an RBI and scoring on both of Robinson's homers. Nia Chiles added one hit, totaled a career-high three stolen bases and scored two runs.

The Highlanders used their first two hits of the game to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Chiles started it with a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice by Marissa Gagliano. Two batters later, Mantel hit a two-out RBI single down the left-field line. Robinson then followed by drilling the first of her two homers over the left-field fence.

The formula was similar in the fifth inning as Mantel kept the inning going with a single and Robinson hit another 1-0 pitch over the fence in left for her sixth homer on the season, with five coming in the last nine games. The four RBIs tied a career-best for the second straight outing.

Chiles then helped capped the scoring in the seventh inning, reaching on an infield single, stealing second and third and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Gagliano.

Morrow, meanwhile, did not allow a hit until an infield single with one out in the sixth. The other was a leadoff single in the seventh – the only ball put in play by the Pirates to reach the outfield during the game.

In the second game, Robinson delivered her third two-out, run-scoring hit of the day to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Chiles walked, advanced to second on a groundout and moved to third on a wild pitch. Mantel then drew a walk – extending her reached base streak to 15 games – and stole second before Robinson hit a 3-2 pitch to the gap in right-center for her third triple of the season.

Like Morrow, McIntyre took a no-hitter into the sixth before the lone blemish came on a one-out double by leadoff hitter Diamond Ponds. A walk and a stolen base were followed by a popout. The Pirates then got on the board on a wild pitch, but McIntyre bounced back to get a called third strike on the cleanup hitter to end the inning and keep the lead.

The Highlanders then answered with three runs in the top of the seventh. Another walk and steal by Chiles was followed by an RBI double by Gagliano, the second of her two hits. She then moved up a base on a bunt single by Mantel and scored on a wild pitch. After Whitney Davis walked, Kayla Bishton made it 5-1 with an RBI single through the right side.

McIntyre then worked her fourth perfect inning to finish off her third complete game.

Radford returns to conference play and begins a seven-game homestand with a weekend series against Presbyterian. The Highlanders will honor their seniors prior to the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, which is set for a 1 p.m. start. The doubleheader opener will also air on ESPN3.
