RADFORD SWEEPS ON SENIOR DAY, RUNS STREAK TO EIGHT IN A ROW

RADFORD, Va. – Abby Morrow pitched her second straight two-hit shutout in the opener and Marissa Yow hit a two-run walk-off home run in the nightcap as the streaking Radford softball team swept a doubleheader against Presbyterian on Senior Day with 4-0 and 4-3 victories Saturday afternoon.

The Highlanders have now won eight games in a row and improved to 28-15 overall and 9-5 in Big South play. The nine conference victories surpass their total from all of last season.

Morrow (16-10) won her fifth consecutive start, including four without allowing an earned run, and notched her third two-hitter of the season. Nia Chiles went 2 for 2 and delivered the big offensive blow in the first game, with a two-run double in a three-run fourth inning. Marissa Gagliano also had two hits and two RBIs.

Presbyterian's Katie Brown limited Radford to just four hits in the second game, but Yow's two-run shot with one out in the seventh inning capped he Highlanders' rally from a 3-1 deficit.

Trailing 3-2, Becky Mantel drew a leadoff walk in the seventh, and two batters later Yow put a 1-0 pitch from Brown over the left-field fence for her fifth home run of the season and Radford's second walk-off homer in a week.

Hannah Medlam drove in the other two RU runs in the game. In the second, she followed a triple by Whitney Davis with an RBI groundout to put the Highlanders up 1-0. The freshman then had a triple of her own – Radford's third on the day – to plate Kayla Bishton in the fourth inning, making it a 3-2 game.

Kayla Huffman earned the victory in relief, pitching three scoreless innings with just one hit allowed, three strikeouts and no walks.

Presbyterian (21-21, 7-9) scored all three of its runs on three hits and a Radford error in the third inning. Two of the runs were unearned.

In the first game, Radford left runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, before breaking through on Chiles' eighth double of the season. Davis and Jessica Curbiera both walked and Chiles put one through the gap in left-center for a 2-0 lead. She went to third on the play with the throw home and was able to score on Gagliano's RBI groundout to the right side.

The Highlanders added their other run in the sixth. Curbiera reached on a hit by pitch and moved to second on a single by Chiles. Following a double steal, Gagliano put an RBI single into left-center.

Morrow, meanwhile, was dominant despite not recording a strikeout. The lone hits came on singles to right field in the second and fifth innings. Of the 21 Blue Hose outs, 18 of them were recorded on groundballs. She again did not issue a walk, giving her six straight appearances without one.

Mantel reached base safely in both games to extend her streak to 17. She also recorded her first career triple in the opener and her 100th career HBP in the nightcap.

Prior to the game, seniors Mantel, Davis, Chiles and Casey Burns were honored, along with Megan Honaker, who graduated as a junior last spring.

Radford will try for its second straight conference sweep when the series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m.
