RADFORD, Va. – Zack Ridgely treated the Radford faithful to another pitching gem as the sophomore held to Gardner-Webb bats to only four hits over eight shutout innings as the Highlanders picked up an important Friday night Big South victory. Ridgely punched out five batters, allowing no walks in the 1-0 gem.

After Ridgely forced three fly outs to open the contest, Radford jumped on the Runnin' Bulldogs early.

Chris Coia led off the bottom half of the first with a walk, advancing to third on a Shane Johnsonbaugh single through the right side.

With runners on the corners, Danny Hrbek grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, allowing Coia to score from third base for the early 1-0 lead.

Ridgely took the lead and never looked back. The lefty worked out of a jam with two runners on base in the third inning and stranded a runner on third in the fifth inning.

Gardner-Webb starter and Big South Pitcher of the Year candidate, Brad Haymes settled down after the opening inning, allowing only three Radford hits over the next five innings.

The Highlanders received an opportunity to pad its lead in the seventh as Colby Higgerson and Nygeal Andrews collected a pair of one-out singles.

After Jordan Taylor grounded into a fielders' choice to put runners on the corners, Taylor swiped second, giving Radford two in scoring position.

With an opportunity to blow the game open, Luke Wise fought hard at the plate against Haymes. Haymes eventually won, forcing Wise to fly out to left field.

Ridgely stranded a Runnin' Bulldog on second base to end his night after his eighth scoreless frame, turning the game over the RU bullpen after tossing 101 pitches.

Austin Ross came on in the ninth, looking for his third consecutive save. Collin Thacker greeted Ross with a walk and Danny Sullivan followed with a bloop single into center.

Gardner-Webb found itself with a chance to take the lead with two runners on base and no outs. Ross settled down, getting Patrick Graham to strike out in a sacrifice bunt situation. Paul Trick lined out to Hrbek and Tyler Best flied out to left field as the Highlanders held on for the shutout victory.

Keeping their Big South Tournament hopes alive, Radford will host Gardner-Webb for a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 12 p.m.
