RADFORD, Va. – Trailing 13-1 after nine innings, Radford plated five runs on five hits in the bottom of the ninth in a comeback attempt versus No. 20 Coastal Carolina, eventually falling 13-6 at the hands of the Chanticleers in a rematch of the 2015 Big South Tournament Championship game.

Fans saw a pitchers' duel early from Radford's Zack Ridgely and Coastal Carolina's Alex Cunningham.

The Chanticleers got the upper hand early in the contest scoring runs in the second, third and fifth innings for an early 3-0 lead.

Ridgely held the Big South's most potent offense to only seven hits through the first five innings. Cunningham held the Highlander bats to three hits through six innings.

After allowing a one-out walk and single to start the seventh, Radford went to its bullpen as Ridgely's pitch count neared the century mark. Miller Trevvett came on in relief, giving up a three-run home run to Michael Paez on his third pitch. The Paez blast gave Coastal Carolina a 6-0 lead.

Radford got a run back in the bottom half of the frame as the Highlanders put runners on first and second on three consecutive fielders' choices. Colby Higgerson lined a single up the middle, plating Jordan Taylor from second for the Highlanders first run of the contest.

Following the RU run, Coastal Carolina's offense exploded for seven runs on six hits in the top eighth, extending its lead to 13-1 over the Highlanders. The monstrous inning was highlighted by a pair of two-run singles from Sam Lancaster and G.K. Young.

The Highlanders would not go away easy for the Chanticleers in the bottom of the ninth. Taylor got the inning started with a one-out double to right-center, advancing to third on a Matt Roth groundout.

Higgerson collected his second RBI single, scoring Taylor again for the Highlanders' second run of the game. Following an Adam Whitacre single and Kyle Butler hit by pitch, Radford loaded the bases for Anthony Miano.

Miano hit a ground ball to third base as the Chanticleer third basemen flipped onto second base for an attempted force out to end the contest. The dropped force out allowed Higgerson to score and load the bases once again.

Danny Hrbek continued the Radford rally with a double down the left field line, scoring two runs and pulling the Highlanders within 13-5 of the Chanticleers.

The Highlanders would add another run on a Trevor Riggs RBI single as the two-out rally concluded with five runs on five hits as RU fell 13-6 to No. 20 Coastal Carolina.

With tomorrow's matchup postponed, the two foes will get Saturday off before returning to the diamond for a double-dip on Sunday. The doubleheader will start at 12 p.m.

QUOTABLE
  • "[Zack] Ridgely kept us in the game and did enough to earn quality start. He has thrown a lot of innings over his couple of starts. He probably shouldn't have been pulled out of the game, but I didn't think he should have to carry anymore innings. He did a fine job; we just didn't score for him.~ Radford head coach, Joe Raccuia
