RADFORD PLATES 10 RUNS IN EIGHTH INNING IN 16-8 COMEBACK WIN OVER PRESBYTERIAN

GAME INFORMATION
  • Radford 16, Presbyterian 8
  • Records: Radford (18-38) | Presbyterian (27-30)
  • Location: Lexington County Baseball Stadium | Lexington, S.C.

LEXINGTON, S.C. – Down to its last six outs and trailing 6-4, Radford put together a monstrous eighth inning, scoring 10 runs on six hits. Nygeal Andrews collected three of his career-high five RBIs on a bases clearing double in the frame as the Highlanders took a 16-8 comeback victory over Presbyterian in the Big South's second elimination game on the day, Wednesday afternoon. The victory also marked the 700th win in program history.

After watching their 4-1 lead slip away and the end of the season nearing, the Highlanders quickly loaded the bases. Presbyterian went to its bullpen, pulling starter Tanner Chock in favor of Hayden Deal. Coming into the eighth inning, Chock has retired 11 Highlanders in a row, before the Danny Hrbek leadoff single.

Andrews greeted Deal with a bases clearing double down the leftfield line, giving the Highlanders a 7-6 lead. Chandler Davis reached on a pinch hit infield single and Luke Wise put down a bunt single to load the bases once again.

With the bases loaded, Chris Coia worked the count full, earning a RBI walk. Colby Higgerson followed with a RBI sacrifice squeeze bunt, reaching first safely on a muffed throw by the Blue Hose second baseman.

Batting around with only one out, Hrbek ripped a 0-2 pitch down the right field line for his sixth triple of the year as the Highlanders took a commanding 12-6 lead. Radford was not done as Shane Johnsonbaugh worked a 3-2 count, coming through with another big hit, giving the Highlanders their third double of the contest. After a PC pitching change, Johnsonbaugh advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt at second base as David Sauer overthrew the Blue Hose shortstop.

With Johnsonbaugh standing on third base and still only one out, Jonathan Gonzalez lifted a long fly ball to left-center, plating Johnsonbaugh for the 10th Highlander run of the inning.

Presbyterian would get two runs back on back-to-back two-out solo home runs from Peter Johnson and Jacob Midkiff. The two Blue Hose home runs cut the deficit to 14-8.

The two home runs didn't matter as Coia singled in Anthony Miano and Wise, who reached on consecutive singles. Coia's first two RBIs of the series sealed Radford's magical 16-8 comeback victory.

Radford's 4-1 lead to start the ballgame was helped by a two-run first inning double off the bat of Andrews and a Johnsonbaugh sacrifice bunt. Adam Whitacre added the fourth run in the fourth inning on a sac fly.

The Highlanders will play the loser of No. 1 Coastal Carolina and No. 4 Gardner-Webb tomorrow in the second day of elimination games. First pitch is scheduled to be 45 minutes after the conclusion of the 3 p.m. game.

QUOTABLE
  • "Proud of our guys for battling back. You lose a lead, it's late in the game and your backs are against the wall; which makes you start thinking about your seniors. We got a couple big hits by some guys and put some pressure on them in the eighth. Our executed bunts forced them to play defense and it was a big inning. We live for another day. [Nygeal] Andrews has a good thing going for him right now. He's making the most of his at bats and coming up with clutch hits. ~ Radford head coach, Joe Raccuia
