CASAREZ’S TWO GOALS PROPEL RADFORD TO 2-0 BIG SOUTH START

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Jasmine Casarez scored a pair of goals less than four minutes apart in the second half, lifting the Radford women's soccer team to its second straight road win, 2-1 over UNC Asheville Wednesday night.
The Highlanders (4-4 overall) improved to 2-0 in the Big South play for the third time in four seasons, while the road victories in back-to-back games are the program's first since 2013.
All of the scoring came in the second half, with Casarez finding the net in the 69th and 73rd minutes for the first multi-goal game of her career. The sophomore now has five goals on the season. Emily Dunn and Jessica Wollmann assisted the tallies, with Dunn notching her first collegiate point.
As in Saturday's victory over Winthrop, Radford was extremely accurate with its shooting, putting nine of its first 10 attempts on goal, including six in a row in the second half, capped by Casarez's strikes. She had three shots in six-minute span, with two stopped by the UNCA goalkeeper and another kept out by a Bulldogs' defender.
However, persistence paid when Dunn lofted a high ball into the box and Casarez headed it to make it 1-0. She added the eventual game-winner off a cross by Wollmann at the 72:26 mark and finished with a game-high five shots, all of them on goal.
As a team, Radford totaled 12 shots and put 10 on frame, including two by Nicole Ray. Wollmann, Jane Everett and Abby Gardner each forced one UNCA save.
Asheville (5-7, 0-2) recorded 17 attempts, with nine on goal. Courtenay Kaplan stopped each of the first eight before Caroline Houser's hard shot in the final minute prevented the shutout. Three of the saves came right just Casarez broke the scoreless tie.
Most of the attacking came in the second half after a first 45 minutes that saw UNCA hold a slim 5-4 shots edge.
"UNCA is a very good team that has great attacking shape and does a great job with possession," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "We had a good gameplan and the players executed. It is extremely difficult to start conference on the road and to get two wins is a great start. Time to recover and organize for our next test against (Big South) undefeated Charleston Southern."
Radford returns home for its next two matches, beginning with Saturday's contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., following the Sue Williams' jersey retirement ceremony.
