Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

RADFORD NOTCHES FIRST VICTORY IN CONVINCING FASHION

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team earned its first win of the season in style, dominating the play from start to finish in a 2-0 shutout of USC Upstate Sunday afternoon.

The Highlanders (1-2) outshot Upstate 28-6 in the game and got goals in each half from Jasmine Casarez and McKensey Ziegler. Jessica Wollmann, Hannah Duff and Jordan Lundin tallied assists.

RU recorded its first shot on goal less than a minute into the game off the foot of Lundin and generated plenty of scoring chances throughout the opening half. Lundin had a handful of them early as her free kick and a header off a pass from Duff both went just over the crossbar. Zeigler and Nelia Perez also had shot opportunities shortly after, with one going high and the latter saved and another Lundin free kick was cleared off the line after a deflection.

In the 27th minute, Perez got loose on a breakaway into the right side of the box and was tackled by oncoming Upstate keeper Brooke Bailey for a yellow card and a penalty kick. Bailey, though, dove to her left to stop Duff's PK low to the right side of the net.

However, the Highlanders finally broke through in the 42nd minute on their 14th shot of the half, as Casarez finished off a well-executed transition play. Duff sent a throughball up the right side to Wollmann, who led Casarez with a pass back inside into the box for another breakaway and Casarez put home the attempt into the upper left corner for her second goal of the season.

Meanwhile, defensively Radford held Upstate without a shot until the 43rd minute as the Highlanders finished with a 15-1 advantage at the break.

RU generated 10 corner kicks in the game and converted one in the 71st minute for the two-goal lead as Ziegler rose above a crowd in front to head home the ball from Lundin for her second career marker. It was Lundin's second assist of the season and 13th of her career.

The Highlanders went on to finish the game with season-highs for shots, shots on goal (12) and corner kicks. Lundin and Cazarez each totaled six shots, Miranda Carlson had five and Ziegler and freshman Taylor Guy reach recorded three.

Courtenay Kaplan did not have a busy day in goal, but made two stops, both in the second half, including one with the game still 1-0, to notch her first career shutout.

"It was a good team win today," Radford head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "Defensively, I thought we did a good job of being organized, double-teaming and locking them down. Attacking-wise we moved the ball well, created lots of opportunities. I think we need to have more quality in the box to finish, but overall it was great to get a shutout and great to get a win. We've played hard in every game and today we got the result of our hard work and we had a great week of training."

Radford will now have another full week of practice before traveling to face Chattanooga next Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup.
