JOHNSON EARNS SECOND BIG SOUTH FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK AWARD

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Radford freshman point guard Khiana Johnson has been named the Big South's Come Ready Nutrition Freshmen of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Johnson joins Liberty's Keyen Green as the only freshmen in the league with multiple weekly awards. Green has collected four weekly honors this season, including three straight to start Big South play.

In pair of Big South wins over Liberty and UNC Asheville, Johnson averaged 14.0 points per game and 3.0 rebounds per game. Johnson tallied 28 points on 11 of 22 shooting with a 5 for 6 clip from the free throw line in 54 minutes of action off the Radford bench.

"Khiana was impactful for us last week in wins over Liberty and UNC Asheville," said head coach Mike McGuire. "She did score for us, but I really liked the attacking mindset in which she played with."

Johnson helped Radford snap its 12-game skid to Liberty in a 76-68 victory on Jan. 24, tallying eight second half points to finish with 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting. She collected her fifth block on the season in the contest.

In Saturday's 64-62 overtime thriller at UNC Asheville, Johnson played a season-high 32 minutes off the bench, including 19 in the second half and overtime. The Chesapeake, Va. native hit timely shots in the second half, finishing with another 14-point performance on 6 of 12 shooting. She grabbed a season-high six rebounds to go along with her two assists.

"When she plays with purpose, it really helps on our team in several ways," McGuire added. "We are proud of how she continues to grow each game."

Johnson has scored double-figures in five Big South games and nine games overall. Since the beginning of league play, Johnson has improved her season scoring average to 8.4 ppg, ranking third on the team and 25th in the league.

Through eight Big South games, Johnson has scored 75 of 159 points on the season in league play. Johnson is shooting 40.0 percent from the field in conference games, making 28 of 70 attempts. She is averaging 9.4 ppg in Big South play, ranking 20th in the league.

Johnson and the Highlanders return to action on Tuesday, closing out the first half of Big South play at Presbyterian. Action is slated for a 7 p.m. start inside the Templeton Center.
