RADFORD WRAPS UP BIG SOUTH FIRST HALF PLAY TUESDAY AT PC



SETTING THE STAGE
  • Radford concludes the first half of the Big South schedule with a Tuesday battle against Presbyterian. The contest is the first of four straight Tuesday road contests for the Highlanders.
  • Series: Radford, 16-4.
  • The Highlanders hold a 7-2 record inside the Templeton Center.
  • Radford has swept the last four regular season matchups. Presbyterian swept the season series in 2014.

  • Janayla White converted a layup through traffic off an inbounds pass with less than two seconds on the clock.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 15-4, 7-1 Big South
  • Last Time Out: It took 45 minutes to play, but the first matchup between the top two teams in the Big South Coaches' Preseason Poll turned into a thriller as Radford held on for a 64-62 overtime win over preseason favorite UNC Asheville.
  • Against UNC Asheville, Radford placed four in double-figures for the sixth time on the season, including four in Big South play.
  • Leading all scorers, Destinee Walker finished with 20 points on an 8 for 16 performance from the floor to give her four 20-point performances on the season. Khiana Johnson provided a second half spark for the Highlanders, scoring eight of her 14 points in the final 25 minutes of play.
  • Walker's 20-point performance is her second in league play and third on the road. She dished out three assists, while blocking a career-high three shots.
  • Johnson's efforts in a pair of Big South wins earned her the Big South's Come Ready Nutrition Freshmen of the Week on Monday afternoon. She averaged 14.0 points per game and 3.0 rebounds per game in the two wins. Johnson tallied 28 points on 11 of 22 shooting with a 5 for 6 clip from the free throw line in 54 minutes of action off the Radford bench.
  • Johnson has scored double-figures in five Big South games and nine games overall. Since the beginning of league play, Johnson has improved her season scoring average to 8.4 ppg, ranking third on the team and 25th in the league. Through eight Big South games, Johnson has scored 75 of 159 points on the season in league play.
  • Radford leads the Big South with six weekly awards. Jayda Worthy (2), Janayla White and Walker has collected player of the week honors. Johnson has been named freshman of the week twice.
  • Jayda Worthy continues her tear of the Big South with 14.6 ppg and 8.6 rpg. The junior has scored 117 of her 268 points in league play.
  • Worthy is shooting 59.0 percent from the field in eight league games, making 49 of 83 attempts. She has grabbed 16 offensive rebounds in the last three games and 37 in Big South games.
  • Radford sports six players with 50 or more points scored in Big South games.
  • Sydney Nunley has made the most of 120 minutes in Big South play, scoring 52 points on 24 of 41 shooting from the floor.
  • The Highlanders have been unselfish in Big South play, dishing out 104 of their 231 assists. Walker leads the Highlanders with 3.6 apg and Jen Falconer follows with 3.0 apg.
 
SCOUTING PRESBYTERIAN
  • Record: 6-13, 4-4 Big South
  • The Blue Hose allowed a season-high 10 3-pointers in an 87-60 lose to High Point on Sunday afternoon. Cortney Storey and Janie Miles led the way with 18 points each. Storey went 7 for 15 from the field; while adding four rebounds and four assists. Miles made 5 of 7 shots to go along with six rebounds.
  • In the loss, Presbyterian was outscored 38-12 in the paint.
  • Storey is the lone Blue Hose averaging double-figures with 12.1 ppg, scoring double-digits in 13 of the last 16 games.
  • She is second in the Big South with 78 assists and 4.1 per game. One of the best free throw shooters in the conference, Storey boasts an 82.1 percentage, ranking 86th nationally.
  • Storey has been an ironman for the Blue Hose this season, ranking second in the league and 51st in the country with 35.8 minutes played per game.  
  • Presbyterian relies heavily on scoring from behind the arc. Of the 1,007 field goals attempted, 510 have come from behind the arc. The 510 attempted 3-pointers rank 29th in the country.
  • Nine Blue Hose have attempted at least 20 3-pointers on the season. Five have attempted 50-plus.
  • Presbyterian is one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country, ranking 30th nationally with a 76.0 percentage.
  • The Blue Hose do not commit a lot of turnovers with 299 committed, which is 74th in the country. Their +1.05 turnover margin is third best in the Big South.

  • Radford opens the second half of Big South play on Saturday, hosting Winthrop in a 2 p.m. contest.
  • The Highlanders won the first matchup on Jan. 7 with a 60-50 victory.
