RADFORD HOSTS WINTHROP WEDNESDAY, AIMING FOR SEASON SWEEP



SETTING THE STAGE
  • The Radford's men's basketball team will look to complete a regular-season sweep of preseason favorite Winthrop when the two teams meet inside the Dedmon Center Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
  • Last meeting: The Highlanders connected on a season-high 16 3-pointers and held on for an 82-80 road victory on New Year's Eve.
  • Series History: The win gave Radford a 36-34 lead in the series and the Highlanders will try to sweep the regular-season meetings for the second time in three years. The Eagles won both games last year, however. Radford is 19-11 all-time in the Dedmon Center.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 9-13, 4-6
  • Radford looks to snap a three-game losing streak both overall and at home. The Highlanders have not lost four games in a row since the 2012-13 season and have not dropped four straight conference contests since the 2011-12 campaign.
  • Justin Cousin is now second in the Big South with his 57 3-pointers, including 35 in conference play, also ranking second in the league with 3.5 per game.
  • Cousin has made at least four 3-pointers in six of the 10 Big South games while shooting 43 percent behind the arc and ranking tied for 10th with 14.5 ppg. For the season, the redshirt junior is averaging a team-high 11.4 ppg.
  • Ed Polite, Jr. remains in double figures with 10.1 ppg, with Caleb Tanner third at 9.6 per game.
  • Polite, Jr. is also still the league's rebounding leader at 9.7 per game, although he is now second in conference play at 9.4, along with being second in steals per game 2.3. He remains in the top 35 in the NCAA in both rebounds (26th) and steals (33rd) per game.
  • Darius Bolstad is coming off a career-high 19-point performance on Saturday. He made 9 of his 10 shots in the game against UNC Asheville and is now 47 of 66 for 71 percent on the season and 25 of 34 (74 percent) during conference play.
  • In the last three games, Bolstad is 14 for 17 while averaging 11.0 ppg with two double-digit outings.
  • Tanner now stands third in the league during conference play with 45 percent 3-point shooting and is tied for fifth with 2.5 per game.
  • Cousin and Tanner were a combined 11 for 21 beyond the arc in the earlier win over Winthrop.
  • Christian Bradford remains third in the Big South with 3.5 assists per game and tied for fourth in conference play at 3.9.
  • During its four-game home losing streak, the Highlanders have averaged 39.3 points in the second half (on 50 percent shooting), but just 20.0 points in the first half (on 28.8 percent).
 
SCOUTING WINTHROP
  • Record: 16-5, 8-2
  • Winthrop had a seven-game winning streak stopped by an 83-80 overtime loss at home against High Point on Saturday. Before that, the last team to beat the Eagles was Radford.
  • Winthrop is 9-2 on the road, including 5-0 in the Big South, and has not lost consecutive games this season.
  • Keon Johnson, who tallied 37 points in the first meeting with the Highlanders, is the conference's second-leading scorer, averaging 20.6 ppg overall and 22.4 in league play. He is coming off a 31-point outing in Saturday's loss.
  • In Big South games, Johnson leads the way with 3.6 3-pointers per game, while shooting 49 percent behind the arc. Overall, his 56 3-pointers on the season are third-most in the league.
  • Xavier Cooks is sixth in the league in scoring (15.4), third in rebounding (8.2) and second in blocks per game (1.8). In conference play, he now leads the way in rebounding (9.6) and blocks (2.2).
  • Anders Broman contributes 7.9 ppg and is second on the team with 38 3-pointers.
  • Winthrop leads the conference in made 3's per game (9.4), while ranking second in scoring (76.3) and third in rebounding. The Eagles are also first in field-goal percentage defense and blocks, second in points allowed and third in steals.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford faces another one of the conference's co-leaders, traveling to Liberty for a Saturday night matchup, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
