RADFORD LOOKS FOR FIRST 2-0 LEAGUE START SINCE 2011 AT WINTHROP



SETTING THE STAGE
  • Radford enters Saturday with a chance to begin Big South play with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2011 as the Highlanders travel to Winthrop for a 1 p.m. matchup. During the 2011 season, Radford defeated UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb and High Point to start league play with a 3-0 clip.
  • Series: Radford, 56-16
  • Since 2010, Winthrop is 6-1 against the Highlanders in games played in Rock Hill, S.C.
  • The Highlanders swept the two contests a season ago.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 9-3, 1-0 Big South
  • Radford improved to 5-0 inside the Dedmon Center with a Big South opening win over Gardner-Webb 67-57. The Highlanders commanded a 19-point lead in the third quarter, but the Runnin' Bulldogs used a 22-6 run in the third quarter to cut once substantial lead to three points.
  • The Big South opener win is the first for the Highlanders since an 81-59 decision at UNC Asheville on Jan. 3, 2011. The win also marked the first Big South opening date home win since Jan. 5, 2009 when Radford defeated Gardner-Webb 82-74.
  • The Highlanders shot a blistering 49.1 percent in the win, matching their season high. Radford shot an identical 26 for 53 from the field against UNC Greensboro on Dec. 2.
  • Of Radford's 26 made field goals, 17 were assisted on. The Highlanders have collected 15-plus assists four times on the season.
  • As a team, Radford has shot over 40-percent on seven different occasions. Gardner-Webb finished with a 42.3 shooting percentage, marking the first time a Radford opponent has shot over 40-percent.
  • In the last two games, Radford is shooting 47.7 percent from the field, making 51 of 107 shots. In the two games, Radford has assisted on 32 baskets.
  • Radford ranks second in the country with a 33.3 field goal percentage defense, ranking just behind Campbell at 33.2.
  • In the win over Gardner-Webb, Jayda Worthy turned in a career performance with 20 points on a 7 for 9 shooting effort. Worthy's previous career high was 19 points.
  • The 20-point performance is the fourth by a Highlander on the current roster. Destinee Walker has two on the season.
  • Worthy is shooting an outstanding 57.5 percent from the floor (46-80), but does not have enough shot attempts to register for the Big South field goal percentage lead.
  • Walker continues to stuff the box score, collecting her 10th double-figure scoring performance on the season last time out. The sophomore also has 10 steals in the last three games and eight assists in the last two contests.
  • Claudia Quevedo has caught fire from behind the arc in the last two games. Quevedo is 7 for 11 from deep. The redshirt sophomore is shooting 32 percent from downtown. She is 10th in the league with 1.3 3-pointers made per game.
  • After missing three early season games, Janayla White has corralled 56 rebounds in the last six games. She ranks second in the league with 8.2 rebounds per game. She is averaging 5.6 defensive rebounds per game, which ranks tied for second in the conference with Walker. White ranks tied for fourth with 2.7 offensive rebounds per contest.
  • In addition, White has 18 blocks through nine games, leading the Big South with 2.0 per game. The 2.0 blocks per game rank 50th in the country.
 
SCOUTING WINTHROP
  • Record: 1-12, 0-1 Big South
  • Winthrop has lost 12 straight contests after opening the season with an 89-40 win over NC Wesleyan.
  • The Eagles have played four opponents from Power 5 conferences in Florida State, Michigan, Baylor and Ohio State.
  • In the 13 games, Winthrop has been outscored 1,045-648, including a 285-161 mark in the opening quarter.
  • Winthrop only averages 49.8 points per game, while opponents are averaging 80.4 points per game.
  • Erica Williams in the lone Eagle averaging double-figures as the senior ranks fifth in the league with 13.2 points per game.
  • Williams takes a majority of the Winthrop shots (62-179), shooting 34.6 percent from the field.
  • Danyael Goodhope follows with 8.8 points per game, tallying 115 points through 13 contests.
  • Goodhope ranks 47th in the nation with 35 steals, averaging 2.5 per contest which is best in the Big South.
  • The Eagles have collected 100 steals on the season, averaging 7.7 per game.
  • However, Winthrop has turned the ball over a league worse 287 times, holding a -7.23 turnover margin.
  • Teylahna Green leads the team with 5.5 rebounds off the bench, while Erica Williams follows with a 5.4 rebounding average.
