  • Records: Highlanders (6-4) | Tigers (5-6)
  • Location: South Point Arena | Las Vegas, Nev.

LAS VEGAS – The Highlanders gave the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic another thrilling contest as Radford used its second straight strong third quarter to hold off a Towson comeback Friday afternoon with a 69-66 victory won at the free throw line.

Radford finished 18 for 30 from the charity stripe as Towson was whistled for 30 fouls as six players had three-plus. The Highlanders were 12 for 20 in the second half.

For the third time on the season, Radford placed four players in double-figures as redshirt junior Claudia Quevedo put together another 15-point performance on a 5 for 8 shooting effort, including three 3-pointers. Quevedo was 7 for 8 from downtown in the holiday classic.

The number 13 was hot for the Highlanders as Khiana Johnson, Destinee Walker and Jayda Worthy finished with the point total. Lydia Rivers narrowly missed her second double-double of the classic, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds.

Commanding only a 34-30 lead at the break, Radford opened the third quarter up with a 12-2 run as the first 10 points of the quarter came in the paint. The Highlanders gained all the momentum during a 40-second span as Quevedo picked a pocket, finding Worthy for the transition layup. Quevedo contributed a layup of her own as Rivers corralled a rebound off her block, throwing ahead to Worthy for the transition assist.

A pair of jumpers from Rivers and Walker pushed the Radford lead to 12 (48-36) with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter. The Highlanders collected five steals in the quarter as they outscored the Tigers 21-15 in the frame.

Taking a 55-45 edge into the fourth quarter, Quevedo knocked down another 3-pointer to push the lead to 13 points, 51 seconds into the quarter. Radford would then be held scoreless until the 6:29 mark.

Towson traded baskets with Radford until the Tigers scored six unanswered points, cutting the deficit to 66-62 with 1:17 remaining. Walker found Rivers for a layup off a dead ball rebound and added a free throw of her own to help hold off the Tigers, sending Radford back to the New River Valley with two west coast wins.
