RADFORD FACES WCU ON ROAD FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2005

SETTING THE STAGE
  • In the only Big South game to be played on Thursday, Radford (3-2) will face two opponents over the next two games that are a combined 1-13 as Western Carolina is 1-7 on the season and Sunday's opponent VCU is 0-6.
  • The Catamounts lone win on the season came against a Big South opponent, defeating UNC Asheville 62-52 on Nov. 12. Western Carolina traveled to Campbell on Monday, dropping a 58-51 contest. WCU will also play High Point and Gardner-Webb.
  • Radford is already 1-0 against teams from the SoCon this season, completing a 56-53 comeback win over UNC Greensboro on Nov. 28.
  • The contest will be the fourth opponent from the Tar Heel State that the Highlanders will have played in non-conference play.
  • In the last two seasons, Radford is 11-5 in non-conference regular season games, while Western Carolina is 6-17.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Radford holds a 7-4 edge in the all-time series, looking to end its winning streak to four straight over the Catamounts.
  • The two teams met in 2016 for the first time since the 2005-06 season, which happened to be the last time the Highlanders visited the Ramsey Center. Radford defeated the Catamounts 76-74 on Dec. 9, 2005.
  • In the first meeting since 2005, Radford defeated the Catamounts 67-39 in an Education Day matchup on Dec. 8, 2016. The Highlanders shot 47.2 percent from the field, while Khiana Johnson led all scorers with 15 points off the bench and Jayda Worthy chipped in 14 on 6 of 8 shooting. Sydney Nunley and Janayla White pulled down 11 rebounds each.
  • Western Carolina last win in the series came 15 years to the day with a 78-68 decision on Dec. 7, 2002.
 
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Radford looks to improve to 2-0 on the season when coming off a loss as the Highlanders dropped a 68-42 decision to Virginia Tech on Sunday in a New River Valley clash.
  • Over the last three seasons, Radford is 14-7 when coming off a loss.
  • Posting her second straight double-double in the loss, Janayla White finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while crossing the 800-rebound plateau in the performance to give her 26 career double-doubles.
  • With two strong games on the week, White was named Big South Player of the Week for the third time in her career, increasing her weekly award total to six.
  • In the two games, White averaged 14.0 points per game, 13.0 rebounds per game and 2.5 blocks per game. Leading Radford to a 1-1 record, White tallied 28 points and 26 rebounds.
  • Pulling down a season-high 14 rebounds on Sunday, White now has 802 career rebounds, which ranks fifth in program history and 23rd in Big South history. She also has increased her blocks total to 163, moving into a three-way tie for 13th all-time in Big South history.
  • Scoring double-figures for the fourth time on the season, sophomore Khiana Johnson leads the team with 12.2 points per game.
  • Not far from averaging a double-double, White is averaging 10.0 ppg and 9.8 rpg, ranking 46th nationally in rebounds.
  • Redshirt junior Claudia Quevedo has dished out three-plus assists in three times on the season, averaging 2.6 per contest.
  • White leads the Big South with 2.00 bpg, ranking 50th in the country.
  • Radford's defense is limiting opposing teams to only 56.2 ppg, ranking 34th nationally.
  • Moving their feet on defense, the Highlanders have only committed 66 fouls, which is best in the nation, committing only 13.2 per game.
  • The Highlander defense is forcing 16.8 turnovers per game, while averaging 12.8 ppg off opponent miscues.
  • In addition, Radford ranks fourth nationally in fewest turnovers with 74 committed, averaging 14.8 per contest.
 
SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINA
  • The Catamounts are currently on a six-game skid, being outscored 439-320 over the span.
  • After opening the season with three straight home games, Western Carolina is playing only its second home game since Nov. 15. The Catamounts are 1-3 in home contests.
  • On the season, WCU is averaging 54.9 ppg, while opponents are chipping in 70.1 per game.
  • Sporting a roster of 15 players, WCU has 13 players averaging double-figure minutes per game.
  • Seven different players average four-plus points per game.
  • Senior Sherae Bonner paces the squad in all three major stat categories with 10.9 ppg, 7.5 rbg and 1.6 apg.
  • From the field, Bonner is 34 for 59 with a 57.6 field-goal percentage.
  • As a team, WCU is shooting 40.3 from the field and only 25.2 behind the arc.
  • Nationally, the Catamounts' defense ranks 45th with a 26.5 three-point field-goal percentage.
  • Opponents have forced 169 Catamount turnovers for 21.1 per contest.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford will host Commonwealth foe VCU (1-6) on Sunday in the first meeting between the two teams since Dec. 23, 2010.
  • The Highlanders last non-conference home game against a NCAA Division I opponent is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
