RADFORD WRAPS UP REGULAR SEASON AT CAMPBELL SATURDAY AFTERNOON



SETTING THE STAGE
  • The Radford men's basketball team will close out its regular-season schedule Saturday afternoon when it travels to Buies Creek, N.C. for a 4:30 p.m. matchup at Campbell.
  • Currently in sixth place in the Big South, the Highlanders can clinch a first-round bye in the conference tournament with a win and losses by Campbell and Charleston Southern on Thursday. They also sit just one game behind fifth-place High Point.
  • Last meeting: Campbell shot 57 percent from the floor and led nearly the entire way in a 78-61 victory in Radford on Jan. 26.
  • Series History: The loss snapped the Highlanders' four-game win streak over the Fighting Camels, but they still lead the all-time series 21-15. Radford is 7-9 all-time in road games against Campbell, but has won two straight in Buies Creek, including a 60-56 decision last year.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 13-16, 8-9
  • Radford has won four of its last five games to clinch at least sixth-place in the Big South and a bye into the quarterfinals of next week's conference tournament.
  • The Highlanders can tie for fifth place with a victory and a loss by High Point, which hosts Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Radford will hold the tiebreaker in that case and be the No. 5 seed in the tourney.
  • Thursday night's victory against Presbyterian was the team's first this season when it scored under 60 points.
  • After grabbing seven rebounds Thursday, Ed Polite, Jr. is nine away from becoming the first sophomore in program history to total 500.
  • Polite, Jr. has scored in double figures in seven straight games and 13 of the last 14, while leading the team in points in each of the last four contests. He is now averaging 11.7 ppg for the season, along 9.4 rebounds (1st in conference), while totaling 56 assists, 53 steals (third in conference) and 29 blocks (seventh in conference).
  • Justin Cousin remains at 11.0 ppg and has reached double figures 16 times, with 11 of them coming in Big South play. He now as 71 3-pointers on the season, more than double his total of 35 last season. He ranks fourth in the conference with 2.4 makes per game.
  • Donald Hicks has posted double-digit points and grabbed at least seven rebounds in the three of the last four outings. He is now averaging 7.9 ppg.
  • Christian Bradford has dished out at least three assists in four of the last five outings, remaining third in the league with 3.6 per game.
  • With 65 3-pointers, Caleb Tanner has also surpassed his total from last year. He continues rank in the conference in made 3's per game, while averaging 9.2 ppg.
 
SCOUTING CAMPBELL
  • Record: 13-16, 6-11
  • Campbell has dropped three straight games, including a 59-49 decision at High Point Thursday night. The other two losses came at Charleston Southern and home to UNC Asheville.
  • After missing the Asheville game due to injury, star guard Chris Clemons returned to the lineup Thursday and was the lone Fighting Camel in double figures with 23 points on 8 of 19 shooting.
  • The sophomore is tied for fourth in the nation with 23.4 ppg, while ranking seventh in field goal attempts and eight in makes. He is shooting 43 percent from the field, including 35 percent from behind the arc, leading the Big South and ranking 22nd nationally in 3-point makes.
  • Clemons scored 36 against Radford in the first meeting, connecting on 13 of 24 shots, including 4 of 10 3-pointers.
  • Shane Whitfield is second on the team in scoring with 12.3 ppg and ranks first in the conference and 19th in the NCAA free-throw attempts, totaling 195 on the season.
  • Kyre' Hamer averaged 9.0 ppg, but scored 15 against the Highlanders last month.
  • Campbell ranks eighth in the Big South in scoring (66.9) during league play, sixth in points allowed (69.9) and sixth in field-goal percentage (44.3).
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford will play a Big South Tournament quarterfinal game next Thursday with the opponent and site to be determined following the conclusion of play on Saturday.
