RADFORD DEFENDS HOME WINNING STREAK SATURDAY VS. WINTHROP



SETTING THE STAGE
  • Radford opens the second half of the Big South slate on Saturday against Winthrop for the first of four straight Saturday home games.
  • The Highlanders have won 11 straight home games dating back to Feb. 9, 2016. The last loss came in a 54-46 loss to UNC Asheville on Jan. 30, 2016.
  • Series: Radford, 57-16
  • The Highlanders hold a 28-5 record against Winthrop inside the Dedmon Center.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 15-5, 7-2 Big South
  • Last Time Out: Radford shot 50 percent from the field, but proved not enough as the Highlanders committed 23 fouls in a 58-54 loss to Presbyterian on Tuesday night.
  • The loss is Radford's first when outshooting the opponent and its first with a field goal percentage of 40-percent or higher.
  • In Radford's two Big South losses, they have turned the ball over 48 times and committed 46 fouls.
  • The Highlanders received 38 of their 54 points from the duo of Destinee Walker and Worthy. Walker matched a career-high 22 points with a career-best 10 made field goals in 15 attempts, including two baskets from behind the arc. Worthy finished with 16 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the floor, including a 6 for 10 performance from the free throw line.
  • Walker's 22-point performance is her fifth 20-point game on the season. She has led the Highlanders in scoring 13 times on the season.
  • Her 10 made field goals joins Worthy as the only two Highlanders to make 10-plus field goals this season. Worthy made 11 against Longwood on Jan. 17.
  • Worthy has now scored double-figures in eight of nine Big South games and 13 total games on the season. She has now scored 133 points in Big South play.
  • The duo is responsible 264 of Radford's 559 points in Big South play, while making the Highlanders the only team in the Big South to have two players rank in the top five in conference play. Worthy ranks third with 14.8 ppg and Walker follows in fourth with 14.6 ppg.
  • Worthy is shooting 60 percent from the field in nine league games, making 54 of 90 attempts. Walker follows with a 46.7 percentage.
  • Radford has dished out 113 assists in Big South play, ranking fifth in the league. The Highlanders have assisted on 113 of 213 field goals.
  • Walker has contributed 31 of the assists for 3.4 apg, while Jen Falconer follows with 25 assists (2.8 apg).
  • Overall, Radford's defense has held all but three opponents below 40-percent shooting from the field, ranking 12th nationally with 34.9 field goal percentage defense.
  • On the offensive side of the ball, Radford leads the conference with a 41.7 field goal percentage, ranking 105th in the country.
 
SCOUTING WINTHROP
  • Record: 2-19, 1-8 Big South
  • The Eagles collected their first Big South win on the season with a 78-72 victory over Longwood on Jan. 24. Erica Williams finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the win. Marissa Cantrell contributed 18 points, four assists and four steals.
  • Winthrop has yet to win a road contest this season in seven attempts, not including three neutral site contests in the Paradise Jam.
  • They have been outscored 590-303 in road games.
  • Erica Williams is the lone Eagle to start all 21 games, while ranking fourth in the league with 14.1 ppg. Williams also leads the Eagles in rebounding with 6.5 per game and assists with 3.5 per contest.
  • She is third in the league in minutes played with 715, averaging 34.1 played per game.
  • Putting together a solid freshman campaign, Danyael Goodhope is averaging 8.7 ppg and 2.3 spg.
  • Goodhope ranks 61st in the country with 49 steals and 68th in steals per game.
  • Seven Eagles are averaging 4.5 ppg or above on the season.
  • Missing majority of the first half of the season, Cantrell has been solid from the field as the freshman has made 27 of 62 attempts for a 43.5 shooting percentage.
  • Winthrop is one of the worst shooting teams in the country with a 33.9 field goal percentage. The Eagles have only made 407 of their 1,201 attempts, collecting assists on 194 attempts.
  • Holding a -11.0 rebounding margin, Winthrop has been outrebounded 970-739 on the season.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford looks to gain more separation in the Big South standings with a trip to Liberty on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup.
  • The Flames are currently third in the league with a 6-3 record.
  • The Highlanders won the first season matchup 76-68 on Jan. 24 to end a 12-game skid to the Flames.
