RADFORD MEETS LIBERTY ON TUESDAY; FIRST PLACE ON THE LINE

 

SETTING THE STAGE
  • Having only played 15 days ago, Radford and Liberty meet in another Commonwealth clash as the Highlanders look for their first regular season sweep over the Flames since the 1995-96. That season saw Radford capture its last Big South crown.
  • The Flames have won the last five meetings inside the Vines Center and 21 out of the last 22 meetings.
  • Radford's last victory at Liberty came in a 62-53 decision on Jan. 17, 2011.
  • Series: Liberty, 42-25
  • The Highlanders are looking to become the fifth Big South team to sweep the regular season series against Liberty head coach Carey Green, who is in his 18th season.

  • Destinee Walker led all scorers with 16 points on a 4 for 4 effort from behind the arc. Radford finished the contest 8 for 10.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 16-5, 8-2 Big South
  • Last Time Out: Radford dished out 17 assists on 28 field goals for their 11th straight home win in a 74-49 thrashing of Winthrop. In their 21st game of the season, Radford placed four in double-figures for the seventh time on the season.
  • Jayda Worthy led the way with a game-high 15 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double on the season. Claudia Quevedo finished with a season-high 14 points, while dishing out a career-high five assists.
  • Destinee Walker and Khiana Johnson rounded out the Highlanders in double-digits. Walker contributed 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Johnson followed with 11 points, two assists and two blocks off the bench.
  • Radford now has 130 of their 257 assists coming in Big South play. They rank fourth in the league with 13.0 assists per game.
  • Offensively, Radford finished with a 44.4 field goal percentage in the win over Winthrop, marking the third straight game over 40-percent and the seventh in Big South play.
  • On the defensive side, Radford has held five opponents under 50 points on the season, ranking 15th nationally in scoring defense. Opposing teams are only averaging 55.0 points per game.
  • The Highlanders also rank inside the Top 15 nationally in field goal percentage defense with a 34.9 clip per contest.
  • Radford does not send the opposing team to the charity stripe often with only 309 fouls committed, ranking 16th in the country.
  • In 10 Big South games, Worthy has scored double-figures in nine games, including 15 on the season. She has led the team in rebounds 11 times on the season.
  • Ranking fourth in the league with 14.8 Big South ppg, Worthy has tallied 148 of her 251 points in league games.
  • Worthy has proven to be one of the best offensive rebounders in the league with 73 on the season for 3.5 per contest. She has seven games of six-plus offensive rebounds, including six in Big South play.
  • Radford sports three of the best rebounders in the conference. Janayla White stands in third place with 7.6 per game, while Worthy follows in fourth with 7.0 and Walker in a tie for fifth with 6.7.
  • Scoring double-figures have become a regular occurrence for Walker, scoring double-digits in 17 of Radford's 21 games. She is second in the league with five 20-point performances.
  • Behind Walker (17) and Worthy (15), Johnson has scored double-figures in 10 games as six have come in league play.
  • As a team, Radford has fared better offensively in the first half than the second half. The Highlanders have outscored opponents 627-505 in the first two quarters, while holding a minimal 673-645 clip in the final two quarters. Despite scoring 300-plus points in the first, third and fourth quarters; Radford struggles have been in the second quarter. Radford has only scored 294 points in the second quarter.
  • The Highlanders have dropped two out of their last three conference road games. In those two losses, Radford has turned the ball over 48 times.
 
SCOUTING LIBERTY
  • Record: 8-13, 7-3 Big South
  • Last Time Out: Keyen Green poured in 12 of her 16 points in the second half to pace three Flames in double-figures as Liberty made 7 of 15 from behind the arc in a 66-63 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
  • Liberty is currently riding a three-game winning streak and have won their last six home contests. They are 5-0 in Big South home games this season.
  • During the three-game conference winning streak, Liberty has scored 80-plus points in each game.
  • Entering the game with a 6-3 home record and four more home games left to play, Liberty will need to finish perfect in order to maintain their stretch of double-digit home wins during a season.
  • Green has led the Flames in scoring seven times on the season, holding the honoring as the only Liberty player averaging double-figures with 11.9 ppg. She has led the team in rebounding nine times, averaging 8.4 per game to lead the conference.
  • She ranks 27th in the land with 4.0 offensive rebounds per game.
  • Liberty ranks second nationally with 18.2 offensive boards per game, while standing in 11th with 43.9 rebounds per game.
  • The Flames have outrebounded opponents 921-749 on the season, ranking 19th nationally with a +8.2-rebound margin.
  • Liberty has blocked 38 shots in its last five games to rank 50th nationally with 4.7 bpg.
  • The new year has been nice to the Flames as they have averaged 73.0 ppg, 44.1 shooting percentage and 38.3 three-point field goal percentage in 10 Big South games.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford continues action on Saturday against Charleston Southern in their annual "Pink Game" set for a 2 p.m. start.
  • The Highlanders will look to avenge their first Big South loss on the season to the Buccaneers on Jan. 27. Radford only scored 17 points in the second during the 57-45 loss.
  • Radford holds a 28-4 home record against the Bucs.
  • The Highlanders have won the last two matchups inside the Dedmon Center with the last loss coming on Dec. 28, 2013 in an 84-64 loss to Charleston Southern.
