WOMEN'S SOCCER SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF 2017

LORETTO, Pa. – The Radford women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2017 campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Saint Francis at the Stokes SoccerPlex Sunday afternoon.

Despite the loss, the Highlanders finish non-conference play with a fantastic 7-1-0 record while the Red Flash improve to 3-5-1 following a very challenging non-conference schedule of their own.

Saint Francis got the scoring started in the 15th minute when a crisscrossing of attacking players was enough to penetrate the Radford defense, allowing Sara Suler to score on a double assist from Emilee Barnett and Gabi Morales.

The SFU goal represents the first time Radford has trailed at any point in a match since the 65th-minute against USC Upstate back on August 20th. That adds up to exactly 500 straight minutes of game time in which the Highlanders were either tied with or led an opponent.

That 1-0 lead then doubled on a goal assisted by Suler to Alyssa McGhee in the 72nd minute. The final insurance came in the 80th minute as Morales slotted home to make it a 3-0 game late.

Junior midfielder Jasmine Casarez, who posted three shots including one on goal, once again led the Highlanders' attack. Freshman defender Jada Ellis and sophomore midfielder Abby Hurst followed with two shots of their own.

Radford struggled to find quality chances in the attacking third thanks to a tireless high press by the Red Flash, but the Highlanders did manage to force three saves from keeper Julia Hernan.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Freshman defender Jada Ellis was active on the offensive end in this one. She was credited with two shots after entering the match with only one the entire season
  • The Red Flash were aggressive from the beginning, evidenced by the nine fouls they were called for in the first half alone
  • Freshman goalkeeper Lexi Dean returned to her starting spot between the sticks after sophomore Courtenay Kaplan got the nod last game. The Fairfax Station native made three saves on 15 shots faced
  • Seven different Highlanders were called upon off the bench in an effort to kick start the offense
  • Sophomore defenders Allyson Giannone and Emily Dunn played all 90 minutes alongside Lexi Dean

QUOTABLE
"We played a very good team today and got outplayed. Saint Francis won their conference and went to the NCAA Tournament last season and it wouldn't surprise me if they did it again. Lots of good lessons today and we have to keep improving as we look forward to conference play." - Head Coach Ben Sohrabi

UP NEXT
  • With their non-conference schedule now complete, the Highlanders have reached the beginning of their Big South slate of games
  • Radford will host Winthrop on Saturday, Sept. 23rd with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
  • The Eagles are 3-3-1 on the season following a 2-0 loss to the Davidson Wildcats in their last outing
  • Radford and Winthrop have one common non-conference opponent: USC Upstate. The Highlanders beat the Spartans, 3-2, and the Eagles topped them as well, 2-1
