Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

OVERTIME RESULT GOES AGAINST THE HIGHLANDERS AT HPU

HIGH POINT, N.C. – A back-and-forth affair at Vert Stadium needed extra time to decide a winner as Radford women's soccer fell to High Point, 2-1, on a 99th-minute golden goal Saturday night.

With 1:26 remaining in the first overtime period, High Point's Paige Rombach beat her defender on the dribble and lofted a chip into the box that managed to beat freshman goalkeeper Lexi Dean over the top for the deciding goal.

The Highlanders struggled to take the reins in overtime as the Panthers took two corner kicks and attempted five shots before Radford was able to get one of their own. It was Radford's first overtime match since October 12, 2016.

With the loss, Radford falls to 1-2-0 in the Big South and 8-3-0 overall after dropping three of the past four matches. Meanwhile, High Point improves to 5-6-1 and stays undefeated at 2-0-1 in conference play.

Following an uneventful first half, the Highlanders were the first side to get on the board in the 59th minute. Sophomore defender Allyson Giannone assumed her place above a free kick and played a dangerous ball into the box from just inside the right sideline. The ball made it to the far post where freshman defender Jada Ellis headed it into the path of junior midfielder Jane Everett and she slotted it home for her third goal of the season.

With her assist, Giannone moves into a six-way tie for fifth in single-season program history with nine on the year. Other Highlanders to provide nine assists in a single season include Brianna Kipper (2007), Lisa Channon (2006), Amanda Lebo (1998), Kelly Reischer (1994) and Dee Dee Herndon (1994).

The Panthers were able to respond in the 72nd minute however, when Dean was called for a foul in the box that resulted in a Becca Rolfe penalty kick goal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Depending on other results around the country, Giannone's 9th assist of the season may leave her as the nation's leader in the category. She was tied for first going into the night
  • No Highlander was able to attempt more than one shot on the night
  • The five combined goals for Radford marked a season-low and the first time they have been held to a single-digit shot output all season
  • Everett's goal gives the Highlanders five players with at least three goals on the season
  • With her assist, Ellis earned the first point of her collegiate career
  • Dean made four more saves tonight to bring her season total to 51
