RADFORD, Va. – Another inspired performance by junior forward Jessica Wollmann drove the Radford women's soccer team in a 4-1 victory over ETSU on a rainy Tuesday night at Cupp Stadium.

With the decisive win, the Highlanders improve to 5-0-0 in 2017 while the Bucs fall to 2-3-0. 5-0-0 is the best start to a Radford season since the club went 4-0-1 to begin the 2013 campaign.

While most goals by the Highlanders this season have been a result of great teamwork and sharp passing in the attacking third, Wollmann got the scoring started all on her own. Looking for the opener in the 15th minute, the Blacksburg, Va. native made a strong run down the right side, beating multiple defenders, before cutting inside and pinpointing a shot into the bottom-right corner of the net.

ETSU got right back into the game with an equalizing goal in the 51st minute when forward Eleonora Goldoni got behind the Highlanders' back line and managed to connect on Kourtney Gaylord's assist into the box to knot the game at one apiece.

None other than Wollmann mounted the Highlanders' answer just six minutes later. She collected a loose ball about 25 yards away from goal and turned on the jets, making a run through the heart of the ETSU back line on a mission to score, hitting a right-footed rocket just under the crossbar and in to retake the lead.

After Wollmann's second goal, the Highlanders took control of the match and put it away late. While the Bucs did manage to threaten on a few occasions, Radford continued to push forward and scored an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. Sophomore forward Nelia Perez used her elite speed to beat he defender in a one-on-one opportunity, streaked into the box and sent a cross in front of the net for junior midfielder Jasmine Casarez to hit one-time into the goal.

Perez then scored a goal of her own to further establish the Highlanders' probability of winning in the 87th minute. Sophomore defender Allyson Giannone sent a long ball from her own third of the field into the Bucs' final third. Wollmann was right there to head the ball down into the path of Perez who made no mistake and made it a 4-1 game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • After scoring three goals and tallying four assists in 2016, Wollmann has already set a new career-high in goals scored with five and tied her career-high in assists with four
  • With one assist each, Giannone and Perez are tied for the team lead with five. Both of whom now rank in the upper echelon of the Big South and the NCAA
  • The Highlanders continue to dominate opponents in the second half and now hold a 13-3 goal advantage after halftime this season
  • Radford took it to the Buccaneers in overall shots, 21-11
  • Freshman goalkeeper Lexi Dean stopped seven more shots on Friday night, bringing her season total to 29 through five games. Courtenay Kaplan led the team with 65 saves in 15 matches last season

QUOTABLE
"I have a lot of respect for ETSU and their program. Their coaching staff does a great job and they've frankly have been a nemesis of ours in the past so I was really happy with our team to step up and get the result tonight. It was a huge win for our program, a great step in the right direction and I thought we played great." – Head Coach Ben Sohrabi

"I'm much more confident than I have been in the past, especially in taking on defender one-on-one which I think has been showing, but I think our group of attacking players have been working really, really well together. We have so many assists and so many different players have scored so it says a lot about our chemistry and how well we've been able to put the ball in the back of the net." – Forward Jessica Wollmann

UP NEXT
  • The Highlanders return to the pitch this Friday, Sept. 8th when they travel to Emmitsburg, Md. To take on Mount St. Mary's. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start
  • The Mount will enter the contest at 3-3-0 with their most recent action resulting in a 2-0 defeat to Temple on the road
