CHARLESTON, S.C. – Radford's veteran presence was key down the stretch as the Highlanders battled back, holding off Charleston Southern's comeback for a 61-56 overtime victory as Jayda Worthy and Lydia Rivers paced the Highlanders with double-doubles.

As basketball history has proved, the Worthy last name holds a clutch factor. The senior poured in 10 of her team-high 16 points in the final 25 minutes, while grabbing 11 of her 14 rebounds. Dishing out four assists, Worthy was the last Highlander to lead the team in all three categories, coming against Winthrop on Jan. 7, 2017.

After being held scoreless in the first quarter and going 0 for 17 from the field, Charleston Southern outscored Radford 31-23 in the second half. Radford's smothering defense held the Bucs to a 17.2 field-goal percentage, but followed the cold shooting with a blistering 48-percent in the second half.

The Highlanders commanded a 22-14 lead at halftime, building the lead to 12 on baskets by Khina Johnson and Worthy to start the second half.

Charleston Southern chipped away at the Highlander lead, starting the fourth quarter on a 14-6 swing, including a 11-1 run. Ke'Asia Jackson and Shauntavia Dobson fueled the Buccaneer comeback as the duo combined for 20 of the team's 31 points in the second half.

Trailing 39-36, Jackson knotted the game on a three-point play with 4:44 remaining and Dobson followed with a 3-pointer to give Charleston Southern its first lead of the game.

Radford trailed 43-39 with 90 seconds left in regulation, the Highlanders finished the quarter on a 6-2 swing. The Highlanders quickly knotted the game on a Janayla White offensive rebound putback and Destinee Walker fastbreak layup off a Claudia Quevedo steal.

Jackson once again handed the Bucs the lead on a long-range jumper with just under 20 seconds remaining. Radford tried to answer with a Walker jumper at the top of the free throw line.

Walker's miss bounced around several players and White dove to the floor, securing a jump ball call to give the Highlanders another chance. Inbounding the ball on the left side of the baseline, Worthy received the ball at the free throw line, driving left for the game-tying layup in traffic.

Charleston Southern's chance to win the game was denied as White blocked Jackson's attempt as the buzzer sounded.

Playing its first overtime game on the season, Radford entered the game with a 5-1 record in overtime games under head coach Mike McGuire.

Radford used an 8-0 run to start the overtime period on a 12-3 swing as the Highlanders made 5 of 6 attempts from the floor to go along with 6 for 10 from the free throw to seal the 61-56 late comeback.

Rivers chipped in four of her seven second-half points in the overtime period as the redshirt sophomore collected her third double-double on the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

QUOTABLE
  • "This really felt like three different games. It was a slow start to the game for both teams. We controlled the game until their run in the fourth quarter and then our veteran presence showed at the end of the game. I'm very proud of the veterans with the basket to tie it and the defense stop to force overtime. Our experience showed a lot at the end of the game and overtime. To have the poise and composure in overtime to take control pretty quickly was what we needed. This was a much-needed road win." ~ Radford head coach Mike McGuire
