HAMPTON, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team took 17 shots and scored two goals in the first half, which led to a 2-0 victory against Hampton at the Armstrong Soccer Annex on Wednesday afternoon.
It wasn't long before one of Radford's early shots found the back of the net and it came in the eighth minute and was the Highlanders' seventh shot of the match. Gabi Paupst received the ball after a Hampton defender kicked it right to her. Noticing she had nobody around her, Puapst fired the shot from about 30 yards away and it went just over the head of Maya Andrews, the Hampton goalkeeper, for the 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders kept firing shot after shot in the first half. Many of them came from Jasmine Casarez, who led all players with eight. Four of her eight shots landed on frame.
Towards the end of the first half, Nelia Perez took a shot that the Hampton keeper punched back into play. It found its way to Sandra Brackett, who was pressured by a Lady Pirate. Brackett played the ball wide to Emily Dunn, who crossed it towards the box. The ball found it's way to Reese Degnan who lightly headed it right past Andrews. Degnan's third goal of the season gave Radford a 2-0 lead in the 39th minute.
Radford totaled 28 shots with 15 landing on frame. The defense did a nice job and held Hampton to only six shots. Lexi Dean played a full 90 minutes in goal and corralled four saves.
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Six minutes into the second half with a two-goal lead, Dean came out of goal to make a play on a pursuing Lady Pirate. The attacking player made a move past Dean and pursued towards the goal. Abby Hurst was trailing the defender and made a tackle before she could take the shot. The tackle prevented an easy goal and kept the shutout intact.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Of the 28 shots the Highlanders took, 15 of them landed on goal. The 15 shots on goal is a season-high for Radford. Casarez and Perez led the team with four, while freshman Degnan tallied three.
