WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO NO. 8 WEST VIRGINIA IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 2018 season came to an end on Saturday night for the Radford women's soccer team with a 6-0 loss to West Virginia at Dick Dlesk Stadium in an opening round match of the NCAA Tournament.
The opening whistle blew and the NCAA Tournament had begun. The Mountaineers controlled most of the possession and connected on a goal in the 10th minute when Nadya Gill found Lauren Segalla for the score. The second goal came just two minutes later in the 12th minute as Sh'Nia Gordon scored her eighth goal of the season. Gordon's goal gave West Virginia a 2-0 lead.
The Highlanders kept fighting and scratching their way back. The first scoring opportunity for Radford came midway through the first half when Jessica Wollmann made a breakaway run towards the goal. With a couple of defenders pinching in Wollmann kept racing down the sideline, but before she could get a shot off the West Virginia goalkeeper crashed and took the ball away. The senior was one shot on goal away from setting a single-season record, but she tied the record with 44 shots on goal.
Radford's first shot came in the 31st minute when Jasmine Casarez had some open space just outside the 18-yard box. She fired a shot, but it went wide of the net. Kayla Thomas gave Radford its second shot in the 41st minute, but it was blocked.
The Highlander defense stepped up in the final 30 minutes of the first half. They only allowed nine shots in the final 30 minutes of the first half and only three in the final 15. Kaplan ended the first half with four saves.
The second half was all WVU as they scored four goals in the final 45 minutes. Three of the four goals came off of set pieces. The Mountaineers had six different goal scorers in the match.
The loss snapped an 11-match winning streak for Radford, but the Highlanders tied a school record for the highest winning percentage in program history with an .825 win percentage and a 16-3-1 record. It's the best winning percentage in the last 21 years.
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
In the second half and with the game still within reach, a foul was called on Radford inside the penalty box, which resulted in a penalty kick. Bianca St. Georges lined up the shot and converted, which made it a 3-0 game in the 59th minute. The Highlanders have not overcome a deficit that big all season and couldn't overcome it on Saturday.

With the first score of the night in the 10th minute, the six-match shutout streak ended. However, Kaplan, Lexi Dean and the Highlander defense had not allowed a goal in the previous 567 minutes. The last time the Highlanders allowed a goal prior to Saturday was on October 13th against USC Upstate.
