WOMEN'S BASKETBALL REVERSES 23-POINT DEFICIT IN HOME WIN AGAINST EAST TENNESSEE STATE

RADFORD, Va. - - - The Radford women's basketball team reversed a 23-point deficit and went on to defeat the East Tennessee State Bucs, 79-64, on Thursday morning at the Dedmon Center.

Radford (2-0, 0-0 Big South) redshirt junior Savannah Felgemacher, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, led five Highlanders in double-digits as the forward scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Felgemacher converted 10-of-17 field goals, including a career-best 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

Senior forward Destinee Walker (13 points, 6 rebounds), freshman guard Bryonna McClean (12 points, 4 assists), redshirt junior forward Lydia Rivers (12 points) and junior guard Khiana Johnson (10 points) all were in double-figures in scoring.

"This was just a gutsy effort by our team and I'm proud of how they fought back against a great opponent," said Highlander head coach Mike McGuire. "Cutting the deficit to single-digits before the half was huge and it gave us more life and confidence to have a big third quarter. We needed a game like this to challenge us."

East Tennessee State (0-3,0-0 SoCon), who scored the first 19 points of the contest, led 36-13 with 3:52 remaining in the second quarter.

"We overcame a lot of adversity today," Felgemacher stated. Our floor general {point guard Jen Falconer} was out and Lyd {Lydia Rivers} was in early foul trouble so we really got a lift from Bryonna {McClean}. She came in with energy and fire and that's what you need coming off the bench."

The Highlanders, however, scored 17 consecutive points to close out the half down just six at 36-30. Radford converted a total of three 3-point plays during the stretch, including a pair of and-one buckets by McClean and Johnson. Walker capped the massive run at the buzzer as she banked in a trey from way beyond the top of the circle.

The momentum continued after the break as Radford exploded for a remarkable 32 points in the third quarter on 66.7 percent shooting. Felgemacher hit all five of her field goal attempts in the stanza, including a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown. In addition, she rejected three of her career-best five shots in the period.

Radford, who forced 27 turnovers in the contest, finally got even when Felgemacher drilled a triple to make it 44-44 with 5:16 left in the third quarter. The Church Hill, Tennessee native staked the hosts to their first lead of the contest just minutes later when she connected again from deep to make it 49-48.

Felgemacher continued her run with another jumper, McClean made a pair from the line and Walker hit one-of-two from the stripe to give the Highlanders a 54-48 edge with 2:48 left.

Radford continued the onslaught as they outscored the Bucs by an 8-2 margin to widen their lead to 62-50 after three quarters. Johnson and McClean each produced four points during the spurt.

East Tennessee threatened to get even in the final period as they opened on a 12-2 run to trim their deficit to 64-62 with 6:57 remaining.

The Highlanders kept their composure and managed to rattle off nine straight points to extend to 73-62 with just under three minutes left in the contest. Felgemacher capped the crucial stretch with a layup after Rivers came up with a big steal.

The Bucs, who qualified for the WNIT last season, never challenged Radford again as the hosts continued to build their lead.

Radford shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) for the contest, hit 6-of-20 (30 percent) from long-distance and were 21-for-30 (70 percent) from the line.

East Tennessee State went 29-for-68 (42.6 percent) overall but were just 3-of-9 from 3-point territory and 3-for-6 from the charity-stripe.

Radford will travel to No. 18-ranked N.C. State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
