RADFORD COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT AGAINST MOREHEAD STATE AT DEDMON CENTER

WALKER SCORES A CAREER-HIGH 23 POINTS; RIVERS JOINS 600 REBOUND CLUB

Radford, VA - - - The Radford women's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Morehead State squad and fell to the Eagles, 79-72, on Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center. The Highlanders slipped to 4-4 on the season while the visitors improved to 8-3.

Highlander senior forward Destinee Walker led the hosts with a career-high 23 points (8-of-13 shooting, 3-of-7 from 3-pt range) and added a season-best eight boards. She is now just 29 points shy of becoming the 24th Highlander to reach the 1,000 point mark for her career. Redshirt junior forward Lydia Rivers, who in the first quarter became just the 16th member of Radford's 600 career rebound club, produced her second double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 13 caroms. Redshirt junior guard Jen Falconer hit 5-of-8 field goal attempts en route to a season-high 12 points.

Morehead State, who entered the contest as the ninth highest scoring team in the NCAA at 86.6 points per game, shot 46.3 percent overall, including 52.9 percent in the opening quarter to get off to a fast start.  Forward McKenzie Calvert hit 11-of-13 field goal attempts and finished with a game-high 27 points while guard Miranda Crockett added 23 points. Calvert's point-total was the most that the Highlanders have yielded to an individual performer this season.

The Eagles, a member of the Ohio Valley Conferene, led 22-12 after the opening quarter as they hit 9-of-17 field goal attempts. The Highlanders also committed six miscues while the visitors did not have a single turnover in the stanza.

A jumper by Highlander sophomore forward Laney Corbin brought the hosts within 25-16 at the 8:03 mark, however, Morehead State scored eight consecutive points to widen their lead to 33-16 with 5:42 left before the half.

Radford was able to respond with a 10-4 spurt that trimmed the deficit to 37-26 with fifty-one ticks left. Falconer and Walker drilled back-to-back triples to cap the stretch, which was ignited by a pair of layups by sophomore Tina Lindenfeld and Rivers.

The visitors settled for a 42-28 halftime lead after guard Aliyah Jeune stuck a trifecta just before halftime.

The Highlanders played their best ball of the afternoon in the third quarter as they outscored the Eagles by a 23-18 count.  Radford was able to get to the free throw line 12 times and converted eight of those attempts while the visitors were just 2-for-3.

Radford trailed 46-33 with 7:19 left in the quarter but went on an 18-5 run to close within 51-47 at the 3:20 mark.  Walker splashed a long-range bomb to cap the spurt and also added a layup during the stretch.

The Eagles answered with six straight points and held a 60-51 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Highlanders nearly came all the way back in the final quarter as they opened the frame on a 10-2 run to inch within 62-61 at the 5:30 mark.  Walker scored the first four points and Falconer followed with her second trey of the day to make it 62-58. Redshirt junior center Savannah Felgemacher (9 boards) then made 1-of-2 from the line and Walker completed a layup to finish the stretch.

Crocket stopped the bleeding for the visitors as she scored back-to-back baskets to give the Eagles a 66-61 lead with 4:29 remaining in the contest.

Walker continued her clutch shooting and canned another trifecta to bring the hosts within 68-65 at the 3:27 mark.

However, that was as close as Radford would get for the remainder of the contest as Morehead State scored the next eight points to widen their lead to 76-65 with just 1:28 on the clock. Calvert scored the first six points of the stretch to put a stamp on her big day.

Lindenfeld (7 pts) scored five points down the stretch but it wasn't enough for the Highlanders to overcome the deficit.

Radford shot well from the floor as they made 25-of-56 attempts for a 44.6 percent clip but went just 16-of-26 (61.5 percent) from the line and committed 16 turnovers.

The Highlanders will travel to VCU on Wednesday evening.
