HIGHLANDERS OUTLAST VCU BEHIND HUGE FOURTH QUARTER EFFORT

FELGEMACHER SCORES 15 OF HER TEAM-HIGH 19 POINTS IN THE FINAL STANZA

Richmond, Va. - - -The visiting Radford Highlanders overcame a 10-point second-half deficit and went on to defeat the VCU Rams, 54-49, on Wednesday evening at E.J. Wade Arena.

"This was a great win for us," said head coach Mike McGuire. "I didn't think it was a well-played game at all but we were able to come in here and escape with the win. The one thing about this group that I really like is that they feel that they can always come back and win."

Redshirt junior center Savannah Felgemacher scored a team-high 19 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Highlanders. Felgemacher, who also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, converted 4-of-5 field goal attempts, went 2-for-3 from long-range and hit 5-for-7 from the line in the last stanza.

"My shot has been a little off and I have been dealing with some stuff physically but I have relied on my teammates to keep my confidence up," Felgemacher stated. "They continue to boost me up and we give that support back to each other. I really love that about this team and I'm so thankful to be a part of it."

Highlander redshirt junior Lydia Rivers recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and senior forward Destinee Walker was also in double-digits with 11 points. Walker, who has reached double-digits in eight straight contests, also added six caroms, five assists and three steals. She is now 10 points shy of 1,000 for her career.

Radford (5-4, 0-0 Big South) held the Rams to 31.9 percent shooting as the hosts hit 15-of-47 field goals and were just 1-for-7 from behind the arc.

The Highlanders made only 16-of-59 field goal attempts (27.1 percent) but came up with 16 offensive rebounds and scored 12 second-chance points.  They also forced 19 turnovers compared to just 12 miscues. In addition, Radford went to the line a season-high 31 times and had 19 makes.

Radford trailed 37-29 entering the fourth quarter after the Rams reversed a 19-18 halftime deficit by outscoring the Highlanders, 19-10 in the stanza.

Walker opened the fourth quarter with a driving layup and then Felgemacher took over the contest, producing 11 consecutive points to cap a 15-0 run by the visitors.

Felgemacher opened the barrage with a pair of free throws with forty-six seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Felgemacher displayed her entire offensive package during the stretch as she completed a conventional 3-point play and also swished a pair of treys, including the equalizer with 8:03 left in the contest.  Her trifecta with 6:33 left gave the Highlanders a 42-37 advantage after she went 1-for-2 from the charity-stripe on consecutive possessions.

VCU (6-5, 0-0 A10) was within 48-47 with 1:39 remaining after Terra Reed made a pair from the line, however the Highlanders held off a late charge with excellent defense and some timely free throws.

Leading just 49-47 with 42 ticks left, the Highlanders forced a five-second violation and then junior guard Khiana Johnson converted two clutch free throw attempts to spot her team a 51-47 advantage with 37 seconds remaining.

Taya Robinson answered with a bucket for VCU but the Rams could not score again while Radford made 3-of-6 from the stripe to salt the game away.

Both teams struggled on the offensive end in the first half. The score was deadlocked at 10 after the opening quarter but VCU opened up a 16-12 lead with 6:07 remaining before intermission.

The Highlanders closed out the stanza on a 7-2 spurt to claim a one-point advantage at the break. Walker hit a jumper with forty-two seconds left to give Radford the edge.

Radford will host Shepherd after the Christmas break on December 29.
