HIGHLANDERS KNOCK OFF SHEPHERD BEHIND CAREER GAME BY NUNLEY

Radford, Va - - -Redshirt junior center Sydney Nunley enjoyed a career-game, helping to lift the host Radford women's basketball squad to a 60-46 victory against the Shepherd Rams on Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.

Nunley, making her first start of the season, converted 8-of-11 field goal attempts en route to 19 points along with a career-best 14 rebounds.

"I came into today's game with the mindset that I needed to step up for the team because I really owed them that," Nunley stated. "I knew that they {Shepherd} were undersized so I just tried to bring my height into play and my teammates did a great job of finding me. Missing last year and being injured in the early part of the season was very frustrating. I feel like I am getting stronger each day and I am working hard in practice to get familiar with my teammates again. I feel like it's all coming together for me now."

Redshirt junior forward Lydia Rivers contributed 10 points and eight rebounds while junior guard Khiana Johnson (4 assists) was also in double-figures with 15 points, just one off her season-high.  Senior forward Destinee Walker contributed a season-high 10 caroms and added six points, leaving her just four points shy of 1,000 career points.

The Highlanders (6-4, 0-0 Big South) trailed 38-37 entering the fourth quarter but opened the frame on a 10-1 run to grab a 47-39 lead with 6:28 remaining in the contest.

Walker ignited the key spurt with a layup, Lydia Rivers followed with a conventional 3-point play, senior guard Alexis Jackson drained a trifecta and Rivers added another layup to account for the scoring.

Shepherd (4-7, 2-4 Mountain East, DII) forward Liz Moorman (10 rebounds) finished a layup to cut the deficit to 47-41 with 6:07 left, however, Johnson hit consecutive jumpers to give the Highlanders a 51-41 advantage at the 3:36 mark. Rivers added 1-of-2 free throws to spot the hosts a 52-41 lead with 2:32 on the clock.

A 3-pointer by Kayla Tibbs (team-high 13 points) brought the Rams within 52-44 with 2:08 remaining but that was as close as they could get for the remainder of the contest.

Radford held the Rams to 32.7 percent shooting on 17-of-52 attempts, including just 3-for-11 from behind the arc. The visitors also hurt themselves by making just 9-of-25 free throw attempts (36 percent).

The Highlanders also forced 20 turnovers and recorded four blocks.

Radford led 29-20 at the break but were outscored by a 18-8 margin in the third quarter as they fell behind by a point after three quarters of play.
