RADFORD GIVES VIRGINIA TECH A SCARE
The Highlanders came up a bit short in their bid for an upset against undefeated Virginia Tech as they fell to the Hokies, 55-44, on Tuesday evening at Cassell Coliseum. The Highlanders slid to 3-3 on the season as all three losses have come against Power 5 opponents.
Redshirt junior center Savannah Felgemacher returned to the lineup and paced the Highlanders with 13 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes. Felgemacher knocked down 3-of-7 3-pointers and finished 5-of-11 overall from the floor. Senior forward Destinee Walker added 12 points and redshirt junior forward Lydia Rivers contributed 11 rebounds and three rejections.
The Highlanders surprised the 1,763 fans in attendance with their tough-minded defense as they took a 23-19 lead into the break. Radford held the high-scoring Hokies to just 25 percent shooting (8-of-32) in the opening 20 minutes.
Radford led by as many as six points early in the third quarter but were unable to hold on for the victory. The 55 points scored by Virginia Tech was their lowest output of the season.
HIGHLANDER TIDBITS
Rivers collected her 100th career block in Tuesday evening's contest at Virginia Tech…Rivers is 2nd in the Big South with 2.0 rejections per game…She is also third on the circuit in rebounding at 8.2 per game…Walker has reached double-figures in scoring in five straight contests and is 13th in the league in scoring at 12.2 per game…JMU transfer Felgemacher is just five treys away from equaling her combined career total of 12 that she hit as a member of the Dukes. That total came in 57 games played for JMU…Johnson needs just two points to reach 600 for her career.
ABOUT VIRGINIA
The Cavaliers have won two straight (Coppin State, American) after opening the season with a 2-5 mark. Virginia is coached by former WBNA star Tina Thompson, who is in her first year on the sidelines. The Cavs are putting up an average of 59.9 points per contest and are yielding 65.1. Jocelyn Willoughby is netting a team-best 12.4 points and 7.8 boards per contest.
PLAYING "D" THE RIGHT WAY
Radford is known for their strong defensive play under Mike McGuire. This season, the Highlanders are fourth in the Big South with a 58.7 points against average and are 85thin the NCAA. One reason for the low scoring production by opponents is the fact that the Highlanders rarely foul. In fact, Radford is THIRD THE COUNTRY in the category with just 83.
